Loyalty Security Program’s views towards Communists McCarthyism was a political movement that made accusations against Communists, named after Senator Joseph McCarthy. This era was during post-World War ll from the late 1940’s through the 1950’s. McCarthyism focused on the Communist party which was a threat to the American government. Many other Americans’ were worried about Stalin and the Communist party in Russia. The executive branch of federal government created a Loyalty Security Program which President Harry S. Truman had written as the Executive Order 9835. As stated the Loyal Security Program “imposed a political test on federal employees, disqualifying anyone who belonged to the Communist party or had a ‘sympathetic assocation’ with it or any other allegedly subversive organizations or individuals” (Schrecker 171). Anyone accused of being a Communist (reasons included signing a petition, attending a protest, joining unions or private organizations, selling atomic secrets and being related to Communists) would be put on trial for a senate hearing. “By putting Communists on trial, the Truman administration shaped the American public’s view of domestic communism. It transformed party members from political dissidents into criminals-with all the implications that such associations inspired in a nation of law-abiding citizens” (Schrecker 27). The program tests federal employees and prohibits anyone associated with Communists within the government. The nation’s security is a example of Communism shown through agents like Alger Hiss, who brought before HUAC on charges of being Russian spy. Whittaker Chambers was a member of the Communist party and a Soviet spy.
