Who do you trust, your king or your conscious? Many characters in Macbeth had to make this very choice as there kingdom was slowly deteriorating because of a tyrant of a king. Macbeth written by William Shakespeare is the story of a brave honourable soldier who ruins his life due to his own greed for power, respect and wealth. This play begins with three witches who inform Macbeth that he will become king. It is clear to all readers that Macbeth is not simply going to wait for these prophecies to come true, after the previous king Duncan is murdered. This is only the first life lost because of Macbeth’s treachery, obviously it does not stop there Macbeth kills everyone he fears including his best friend Banquo and Macduff’s family. Macduff flew to England to get aid for Scotland, leaving his family defenceless and in more danger than any of them could have imagined. The most surprising and tragic murder in this play would have to be the murder of Macduff’s family because this was the first killing were Macbeth choose not to kill the person who he was threatened by but innocent people that were connected to that person. It was also the first time that Macbeth had slaughtered a group of people at one time. Macduff would do anything for the safety of his country, his loyalty showed many times throughout this play and he was one character that moved all reader’s emotions. But when he hears of his family’s murder he feels responsible “I cannot remember such things were that precious to me….. Sinful Macduff, they were all struck for thee” (4.3, 264-267). Macduff’s loyalty blinded him to the danger that both him and his family were in. This quote shows that Macduff although was careful who he gave his loyalty to, he waited to long to act upon his suspicions that Macbeth was truly a murder and that cost him his family.
