Henry Merida Period 3, English Looks over Experience In the article “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination” by Steven Greenhouse, the article starts off with the story of Elizabeth Nill. Elizabeth is a sophomore at Northwestern University, and often shops at Abercrombie & Fitch. She said that in at least in 3 Abercrombie & Fitch stores, managers have approached her and offered her a job. “Every time this happens, my little sister says, “not again,” said Elizabeth when she recalls how often it happens. Besides A&F stores like L’Oreal, W Hotels to Gap stores are also approaching this trend. They look for workers who are good-looking and sexy. Many stores are taking the approach to hiring based on looks to create an image for the business, but in doing so many companies have come across a wave of lawsuits. Hiring good-looking people isn’t technically illegal, but discrimination against age, sex, ethnicity, or race is. But that’s where the confusion begins. Some stores pride themselves in this trend because they want to project the image of the classic “American Look” Companies say it isn’t discrimination. No it is not because there is no law stating that a business can’t hire based on looks. But just because it isn’t against the law doesn’t mean it should be allowed. A company should be built on equality and good business rather than only hiring a certain type of person. They’d rather spend less money and have “walking billboards” walking around their store than spend more money on advertisements. Therefor I think companies would progress more if they had workers based on certain skills rather than just looking good.
