She is also a loner with no friends and I myself don’t have a large amount of friends. In the beginning of the novel Melinda seems like a loner with no friends, and a little insecure, “As we leave the last stop, I am the only person sitting alone”(3) She is always alone except for sometimes she hangs out with this new girl Heather. Melinda also has nothing good to ever say about herself. Melinda changes throughout the novel due to all the stress she goes through. It makes he stronger with conflicts she goes through.
This book is about a young woman suffering and trying to overcome her borderline personality disorder. It is here to declare that raging mental illness CAN be cured. A twenty-nine-year-old woman by the name of Rachel Reiland is an accountant, wife, and mother of two young children, Jeffrey and Melissa. In her early childhood Rachel grew up with a very strict and rude father, a dependent, weak mother, and a caring sister. Her parents never realized that after every meal Rachel would secretly go to the bathroom upstairs and throw up everything she had eaten.
The reader can tell that Esperanza wants to become a writer when the book says ‘One day I will pack my books and paper. One day I will say goodbye to Mango.’ Another goal the two have in common is to fit in. Cisneros didn’t fit in to her family because she was the only girl and had six brothers. She said that her dad always said ‘I have seven sons’ wishing he actually did. Esperanza doesn’t fit in because the only friend she has is her little sister Nenny who she doesn’t even consider her friend because she is too young.
Then she had to survive on the ship for two months. To get to the colony she must lie to the captain and say there are people waiting for her. Her aunt and uncle really have no idea that Kit is coming. Kit finally makes it and makes a new friend. Kit makes an old lady friend named Hannah who is accused of being a witch and she must help her escape.
Nyle’s Grandma allowed two evacuees, a mother and her very sick son, to settle in her house until the boy got better. The boy’s name was Ezra, and in the beginning Nyle was not happy with him staying at her house. She was sure he was going to die, so she swore she would not let herself get too close to him, she was to afraid she would lose him. Pity overcomes her and they become great friends. Towards the end of the novel Leukemia overcomes Ezra and Nyle is forced to live with the thought that Ezra might be dead.
This change in Lewis is apparent when he describes the opera as being about “important things, like love and fidelity” and when he reacts genuinely hurt to when he discovers that his girlfriend Lucy has been having sex with Nick. Ultimately Lewis ends his relationship with Lucy because of their conflicting principles. In addition, Lewis also benefits from the production through his partnership with the mentally ill as he is able to understand what the “insane” people are really like. Harrison gives us some form of backstory for each of the characters except for the narrator. This is a very deliberate technique used to try and emotionally attach us to these characters before they are abruptly removed from the story as if they never existed. “Better out of it.” Harrison gets the reader to believe that if a soldier is killed in battle or dies from a disease that they are better off than if they were still alive, but by still applying a backstory albeit small to the characters who die we are made to feel like the narrator as he sees all his comrades fall one by one around
The people gave them to much power, and they became power hungry tyrants. Both Grant and Hale stood there grounds, and helped the innocent people that don't deserve to die. Grant makes a good point when talking to Vivian, when he says “Suppose someone said something about you-would you want me to just walk away?” (Gaines 209). I remember in 7th grade I overheard a boy talking bad about my friend, and I went up to him and told him to shut up, and that he was a jerk. It felt good because it was the right thing to do.
Max's story aims to encourage Liesel to be brave and willing to counter words of hatred with words of love; these final lines suggest that others would be willing to follow her if she took such a stand. 10.
