The Circle of Life Disney’s The Lion King, produced by Don Hahn and released in 1994, is widely praised as one of the best children’s films ever made. Timeless characters, songs, and themes make The Lion King a memorable movie appropriate for all audiences. This classic story follows the growth of the newborn lion cub Simba who is next in line to rule the animal kingdom. However, Simba’s birth has gotten in the way of his jealous uncle Scar’s plot to one day rule over the pride. Thus, Scar attempts to lead Simba to his death, who is saved by his father Mufasa at the last minute. Scar’s next scheme traps Simba in a canyon unknowingly awaiting a stampede, once again being saved by his father who is then killed by Scar. With Mufasa out of the way, Scar convinces the naive Simba that it is his fault that Mufasa died, further “advising” Simba to run away and leave the kingdom to him. Simba agrees and runs away into the jungle where he quickly befriends Timon and Pumbaa, who share their carefree ways of “no worries” with Simba. Years pass as Simba matures and adopts this simple lifestyle in the jungle while Scar has run the pride into a barren wasteland. The lions are forced to hunt in the jungle, and one day Simba is forced to fight off another lion trying to catch Pumbaa. Simba recognizes this lion as his childhood friend and lover Nala, who pleads with him to return to challenge Scar as the rightful ruler of the kingdom. Simba initially refuses, but a mystical vision of his father in the clouds convinces him to return to his home. Simba realizes that it is time and returns to the wasteland with his new friends to battle Scar for the kingdom. Scar and Simba engage in combat, where Simba learns that Scar is to blame for Mufasa’s death. Fueled by anger, Simba is able to come out on top, leaving Scar to his death.
