Does Turner’s thesis reflect a mythic view of the West or real experiences? According to Frederick Jackson Turner’s thesis on The Significance of the Frontier in American History, he believed that the nation was shaped due to the American frontier and their pioneering ideals. Their ambitions, determinations, hopes, and dreams made a huge impact on civilization. The frontier definitely moved at a different pace since they had horses and canoes versus cars, ships, planes, etc.
With the intent of reducing discrimination against freed slaves the government passed the Civil Rights Act of 1875. It was eighty years later that another civil rights movement would stir in the United States. Western society was changing its ideology that segregation based on race was acceptable to the belief that everyone has inherent human rights. In response to this transformation of societal values the government sought to equalize treatment of minorities in employment practices with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This opened the door to a series of affirmative action policies that would change the way business and government carry out their basic functions.

During my reading I learned a lot about the reconstructive period and the US changed a lot for what they thought was good or fair. During my time of reading it showed me how the South changed only to suit them and they thought was fair. The first document I would like to talk about is document 16-4 A black Convention in Alabama. This started in 1867 and it was something that went throughout the whole confederacy. This was reorganized under the auspices of Reconstruction.

In considering the process of America changing to become a powerful federal nation state in the period 1870-1981, how far could the New Deal be seen as the key turning point? Since the American Civil War in the 1860s there have been several turning points in changing the US into a powerful federal nation state. Many people feel that it was the New Deal during the 1930s which helped change America the most. Using information from historians I will analyse whether the New Deal was the key turning point; or whether Reconstruction from 1865-1877 or the Great Society from 1964-1968 were in changing the status of the American federal nation state. I believe that the New Deal was a key turning point in terms of United States as a powerful nation.
