If you stay with a tiger in a boat, will you be afraid? If you stay with a tiger in a boat for 227 days, do you think that you can survive? In Life of Pi, Yann Martel (2001) gives us a unique experience of a twelve year-old boy who demonstrates how to live with a tiger in a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. In the novel, a twelve year-old boy who is called Pi, is a one of the survivors from a ship wreck in the Pacific Ocean. He loves animals and religions. His personal background, such as the knowledge about animals and the passion of his three religions (Hinduism, Islam and Christianity), give him support to survive. He is saved in a lifeboat with few animals and one of the animals is a tiger. After the tiger ate all the other animals in the boat, and Pi is the only living object in the boat with the tiger, Pi needs to find a way to stay alive. Pi lives with the tiger, trains it and feeds it. The novel Life of Pi describes the growth of the main character, Pi, and the story development by using different writing methods which include personification, similes, imagery, and metaphors. The author especially uses imagery and metaphors to describe the story’s development and to inspire the unlimited imagination of readers. Imagery helps readers to complete the whole picture of the story. In Life of Pi, the author uses imagery such as similes to describe and emphasize the details of the story. For example, Martel (2001) states “A pearl of water appeared” (p. 179). The author uses a pearl to emphasize the value of water for Pi. In general, drinking water is normal for everyone. In the story, Pi does not drink over three days, so he is very thirsty. When he finds the cans of drinking water, his excitement of the water is more important than anything else at that time.
