Life in underdeveloped countries Introduction Situated at the geographical heart of the African continent, the republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. Averaged about 1100m above sea level It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is also bordered by Kenya and Tanzania. (Appendix 1) Kampala is the largest city and capital of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Central, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa and Rubaga. Being the largest city the area is bustling with activities whether there shops, restaurants, parks or even just the suburban areas Kampala is definitely the most distinguished country within Uganda. The republic of Uganda have a national flag with the colours red, yellow and black underpinning the colors of the native African Americans who Uganda is home to. Uganda is also represented with their own coat of arms and the motto "For God and My Country.” Population The population of Uganda for 2009 is estimated by the United Nations at 32.4 million, which places it as number 40 in population among the 193 nations of the world. Approximately 2% of the population is over 65 years of age, with another 51% of the population under 15 years of age. There are approximately 99 males for every 100 females in the country for 2009. According to the UN, the annual population growth rate for 2000–2009 is 3.24%, with the projected population for the year 2015 at 39,335,000. Economy For decades the Ugandan economy suffered from devastating economic policies and instability, leaving Uganda as one of the world's poorest countries.
