One negative aspect to his essay would have to be his bias toward conservatives and the rich. He deliberately labels out the rich in many of his examples by pointing out how they claim to be Christian but do not wish to help aid the poor. As for conservatives, he not only points out George W. Bush but refers at times to religion as “conservative religion.” This clearly shows his bias toward them and could be a way for him to associate them with the American Christianity problem. I believe McKibben has a great point on this issue. As American Christians, we always believe that if we do good deeds or help ourselves we go to heaven.
The reason for why governments in developing countries sometimes are unable or unwilling to implement polices that create favorable conditions for economic growth boils down to two main reasons: social issues and political issues. Political issues are just as multifaceted as the social issues. Due to corrupt governments and regimes the lawlessness spreads throughout the developing nation like wildfire. Political issues revolve around the basic needs of a nation such as simple, yet, necessary infrastructure of schools, hospitals, septic tanks, etc. The necessity of public goods is vital for a developing country to survive, maintain, and become what we consider today, a developed country.
SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT In “Addiction in Free Markets” by Bruce K. Alexander and Stefa Shaler the main idea focuses on the causes of addiction that free markets bring to society, and the effects of globalization in free markets societies on each individual. Bruce tells us that, “free markets societies universally dislocate their members, leading to mass addiction” by ignoring and not respecting all the limits of the rights that individuals have. Bruce mentions Adam Smith who was a Scottish economist that warned that government should prevent free markets from becoming formidable and powerful to stop the great dislocation this was causing in society. Bruce explains that people change their ideologies, families, occupations, and lifestyle to try to fit in a society that looks so appealing and adopt new ideas of the way they should be to belong in a group and fill that painful void of dislocation. People integrate new habits which may include drug use and other activities that do not include drug use and they adhere to this things with such a passion that then it becomes an addiction.
Unfortunately, when it comes to answering the question which is the most critical in the entire book ; ‘determining an objective telos of mankind and all creation in order to form an economic framework around that ultimate purpose’, Cavanaugh sourced his answer in all the wrong places. His references are, If I may say, nearly always to ‘church tradition’ or ‘papal teaching’, and the writing of historic theologians such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas rather than to the Word of God. Even when these traditions and teachings are based on sound doctrine, his choice is to base authority on human words rather than on the Word of God, displaying his hesitancy to give the final glory to
Ethan Gregory “Tragedy in the Commons” is a comprehensive essay by Garrett Hardin proposing a government limitation on the reproduction within a family. Hardin suggests that by placing restrictions on the size of families, the overuse and depreciation of the economical assets will at minimal effect slow the steady decline of our nation’s ability to “sustain” our way of life. While the growth of the population is directly mentioned in the article, I believe Hardin also wants us to see the way of life we all know cannot be maintained without sacrificing the very freedoms that make up this way of life. This work has a primary focus on the size of families and the act of surrendering the right to have a family of any size that we as “free”
The continued power grab will destroy the capitalist system shackling the limbs of the free market. The regulation imposed creates factions limiting the ease of market entry. The environment that our American business calls home must remain competitive assuring quality goods to consumers while encouraging technological advancements. The path our federal government is currently on is a path of non-democratic regulation that is a threat to the growth and prosperity of our country. It is simply a matter of the true meaning of the Constitution, specifically the commerce clause that must be addressed.
All the policies and action Obama is taking, will make him transformational in the end. He understands if we keep ignoring problems in our society and keep letting them become bigger, then America could essential be in the worst shape it has ever been. We need major reform and we need it now. Obama is attempting to not make everyone equal, but build up the middle class again. Americans are growing further and further apart when it comes to money, and this is contributing to the major problems like: unemployment, education, and inequality.
White noted that Christianity was a complex faith, and different branches of it differ in their outlook. But in general, he proposed that Christianity, and Western civilization as a whole, held a view of nature that separated humans from the rest of the natural world, and encouraged exploitation of it for our own ends. There has been much discussion of these ideas, and they have been both attacked and supported (some of this discussion is referenced below). But there is no doubt that this article raised some important questions. There is much literature on the influence of religious beliefs and traditions on a person's
Max Weber’s Theory of Verstehen Max Weber was a scholar and a sociologist born in Germany in 1864. According to this sociologist one of the most distinguishing characteristic of a society is change or shift in motivation because of structural or historical forces. The Protestant work ethic has been of considerable influence to Max Weber’s work. The Puritan Work ethic or rather the Protestant Work ethic has its basis on Calvinist, which emphasize on the necessity of hard work for worldly success. Through the Protestant Ethic, Max Weber opposes Marxist concept of materialism and relates the rise of capitalism to be as a result of the moral value and hard work.
There are several examples of nationalism taking to an extreme that results in problems for the nation; nationalism tends to lead to economic isolation. It is important that the economy is able to grow from foreign investments and world trade; extreme nationalism prevents these things from happening. A new trend in nationalism that has arisen in recent years is regional nationalism. Regional nationalism aims to break up existing nations into smaller sections based off regional location; it is based on hatred of being ruled by unlike
