Leon Botstein’s “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood” talks about how high schools are obsolete and why they should be abolished. Botstein believes that high school is a waste of time. He believes that high school creates an artificial environment for students because it hides them from the real world. Botstein also believes that high schools are worthless because they sponsor group mentality and destroy individuality. Botstein believes that every high school should be abolished because students don’t learn anything. He feels that since students are only mixed with other students that they are not seeing or living in the real world. Botstein believes that students are becoming more mature at a younger age and that high school is destroying the student’s ability to succeed in life. According to Botstein, junior high schools should be removed and replaced with a K-10 school and the graduation age of 18 should be dropped to 16. At the age of 16, students can either go to college or get a job believes Botstein. Botstein believes that everyone should enter the real world as soon as possible and that the idea is practical and efficient and that implementation is long overdue. Through p-o-v, repeating diction, and specific details the author illustrates that high school is waste of time. Although Botstein brings up several good points about eliminating high schools, he forgets to mention what important life building skills high schools offers teenagers (Botstein). High school is very important to every teenager for several reasons. High school gives students many things that they would not obtain from everyday living. One major thing that Botstein forgets to mention is that high school teaches students leadership skills.
