Llorico 1 Josh Llorico Professor Rawley 10.23.13 English 081 A Lesson from “March To Freedom” In “March To Freedom” we see the story of Edith Singer during the holocaust and how difficult situations got for her. Throughout her story she is faced with certain situations that many would never be able to withstand, but she remains strong and hopeful. Edith is faced with various encounters in the camps where the soldiers attempted to humiliate and dehumanize her. Camps, such as Auschwitz, found it their goal to remove their prisoners’ individuality. Despite the various degrading and inhumane actions of the Nazis, Edith showed us that through her times of desperation, she was still brave and willful. Brave by definition is ready to face or endure danger or pain. Edith was put in a situation where she had to sneak out passed the guards and run to the truck where the vegetables were, in order to help others."Then it was my turn to run, grab a potful of potatoes, and bring them to Petyu" (47). Edith displayed extraordinary bravery because she could have faced certain death or cruel punishment for her actions. She continued to pursue what was right. Selfless acts such as this teaches us that bravery can be conducted by anyone, such as Edith. Though Edith was faced with difficult times she still chose to do what was right. One of the early demeaning situations Edith was put into was that she was forced to be tattooed. Being forced to be labeled and in a sense branded by another human is a disgusting and would destroy anyone’s dignity. However, Edith refused to be even fazed by this. From this small action it shows us that her will would not be broken by this cruel action from the
