The second president I would like to discuss is Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln served as a Captain of the Illinois Militia during the Blackhawk War. He had little military experience but, was leader during the American Civil War. Having military experience allowed him to better outfit the troops and provide more informed leadership skills. Using his experience, he knew that the rebellion needed to be ended quickly and implemented blockades to hurt the enemy, knowing they could not fight without supplies.
When Robert was eleven his father died and his mother became ill. Robert had to take care of his sick mother and still attend school. Robert always thought back about his heroes and the duties they had to do. Robert was excited when he got a letter from West Point. West Point was a military academy on the Hudson River. Military students had to work hard.

This film was adapted from the letters from Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the military officer in charge of the Fifty-fourth regiment. His letters showed the strength, courage, and motivation from the men in the Fifty-fourth company. This division was the first all black regiment in Massachusetts during the Civil War. This group consisted of African Americans willing to fight and die for the Union. At first the United States government was undecided about the use of black soldiers in the army and used them in demeaning tasks.
