Every year our state has to spend a large sum of money on supervising marijuana because it is illegal. But once Proposition 19 is passed, those marijuana offenders and drug traffickers will be innocent. “The measure could result in savings to the state and local governments by reducing the number of marijuana offenders incarcerated in state prisons and county jails, as well as the number placed under county probation or state parole supervision”(Brown 14). This could save California millions of dollars annually.
Marijuana & Teens Easy accessibility has made smoking marijuana popular among teens. Some parents may disagree that marijuana is easy for teens to gain access to, but “the frequency of teens smoking marijuana has increased to 80 percent” (CBS News Staff, 2012). This percentage rate makes it much more believable that teens are gaining access to marijuana at an alarming rate. Many teens develop interest in smoking marijuana from either imitating the behavior of their parents, peer pressure, or feeling the need to fit in with others. The recent legalization of marijuana in some states makes accessing marijuana much easier for teens.

Our tax money is being spent on the cost of prosecution and defense of accused offenders, cost of incarceration of convicted offenders, foster care and social services for children of incarcerated offenders, and cost of active law enforcement (SDAA). Housing a single marijuana offender in a prison costs taxpayers over $100,000 (Donziger). In total, taxpayers spend up $7.5 billion, or $23,500 per person, annually on feeding, clothing, and providing shelter for marijuana offenders (Donziger).

Anti drug programs have been implemented into schools to teach the youth that marijuana (and other illegal substances) is bad for them and that it projects the image of a criminal. However, through much research it has been proven that marijuana has beneficial uses for society and is in fact a positive reality for many people. Marijuana is used to treat epilepsy, cancer, eating disorders, depression, stress, and so much more.
