The end of prohibition on Dec 5 1933 the 21st Amendment allowed each state to set its own alcohol sales and consumption laws. Most states set their legal drinking age at twenty-one years old however two states Oklahoma and Illinois made the law at twenty-one for men and eighteen for women. In 1934 the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) act stated that the legal age for purchase, possession or consumption of any alcoholic beverage was twenty-one years of age. In 1974 the ABC made a change and the legal drinking age for beer was lowered from twenty-one to eighteen but wine and liquor was still at twenty-one. Many people enjoy the beverage and cannot wait until their 21st birthday to legally consume it. At eighteen you’re allowed to buy tobacco in most states, you can purchase a house, take out a vehicle loan, and be tried as an adult for crimes committed but not treated as an adult and be allowed to have a beer. So what made the government decide that twenty one is the appropriate legal drinking age when you are legally able to vote, join the military and be considered an adult by society at eighteen? This typically happens when men consume 5 or more drinks, and when women consume 4 or more drinks, in about 2 hours.” To many people this doesn’t seem like excessive consumption but bear in mind that this is the minimum requirement for binge drinking and everyone has different alcohol tolerances depending on drinking history and body composition. The type of binge drinking that is a problem and concern comes in many forms of drinking games that are designed to get someone drunk in a very short amount of time. Some of the common games include beer bongs, keg stands, beer pong, flip cup, and hundreds of other drinking games where the intention is to chug as much alcohol as possible in the least amount of time. According to CDC.gov one in six adults binge drinks about four times per month and consumes roughly eight drinks per binge. Also about 90% of the alcohol consumed by youth under the age of twenty-one in the United States is in the form of binge drinking. This is not because the under twenty-one year olds are less responsible but because the drinking is being done outside of the bars, clubs, and restaurants where there is no one to cut you
