Gatto says that school diminishes creativity; if anything kids discover their hidden creativeness in class while at school. He also says that kids are not able to advance in higher learning. When clearly, kids are able to follow the teacher and be able to get A's while the subjects get more extreme. Gatto says, "teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect"(pg. 683) from personal experiences I can say that I have had great relationships with my teachers throughout elementary school and especially High school.

The thesis of Mary Sherry’s essay is that teachers and parents need to take further action to help their students earn their diplomas. The main points Sherry expresses in her essay are that students barely have any motivation to focus in school, how students are not satisfied with their academic skills, and ways that teachers can get their students to study. Francine Prose states, "Traditionally, the love of reading has been born and nurtured in high school English class." I disagree with this statement only because of my own personal experience. My love of reading was stimulated by my own passionate mother who instilled in me from a very early age that reading books frequently is important for any educated individual. I was very startled to find that other children weren't as lucky as me, relying primarily on their school education to teach them how to read and to love reading. By the time that we were in middle school, the majority of my friends felt that reading was a chore and turned their noses up at any books I'd suggested to them.
Before the new standards took effect, instruction focused more on quantity. If the student's didn't hear or understand the information taught to them the teacher would move forward in instruction. I know for a fact that my Grandma is also what makes reading so easy for me. Almost as if it’s a second nature! Whenever I become stuck or draw a blank when writing an essay I like to give my grandma a call and she always does know the right thing to say or other terms write. I was able to write the words and letters down with minor errors the problem was writing well enough for you to understand what I wrote. In Guyana my parents had a class called dictation; it was basically writing down what the teacher wrote on the board. This was to improve your handwriting, and because of their teachings they made me go through they’re dictation and I would just write a page out of their book and if it didn’t look good enough they would make me do it all over again.
