Leadership skills of a Gladiator Billy Davison (4348839) American Public University System Professor Laurie Genesi-Bloom 12/19/12 Abstract This paper will discuss the techniques and leadership skills by using examples of the movie Gladiator. The gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius was an excellent leader and showed exemplary skills in leading his men to battle. Some of the most effective skills he used were leading by example, communication, and putting his soldiers before himself. Some of the least effective skills he used were using revenge for his mission and anger to fuel his passion. Maximus used personal power by using his more positive personal traits to encourage people to follow him and want to even fight and die for the cause (Conlow, 2001). The leadership of Gladiator in this movie is ideal for excellence in leadership. When you have people ready to follow you to their death not because they are made to but because they want to because they believe so much in the leader, that is the highest example and praise of one's leadership. Wart time is a very high level of stress for leaders the types of leadership needed to keep people alive is imperative which include maintain a level head in the face of fear and death. Also to be discussed is the trait that I most relate to with the gladiator which is to lead by example, I believe without this a leader is just a voice telling orders, not a true leader. Finally, reasons will be discussed as to why someone using “textbook” techniques fails in being an excellent leader. There are many techniques the gladiator used that were effective. The most important were that he led by example, was compassionate about his men, willing to put them first and even die for them, had vision, and he communicated well.
