Planning/strategizing enables management to go beyond daily activities to set realistic goals for the organization’s success. Leading is the ability to motivate people to give their best both individually and within group settings. UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP Understand Leadership Styles Describe factors that will influence the choice of leadership styles or behaviours in workplace situations To enable understanding of factors influencing the choice of leadership styles and behaviours I considered Situational Leadership and will link this to my own workplace experiences. Situational Leadership covers 4 styles of leadership, directing, coaching, supporting and delegating and two types of behaviour being amount of direction and/or support employee needs when carrying out tasks. It also depends on employees’ competence and commitment of which there are 4 levels. Competence depends on employees experience/knowledge/training for any given task and commitment can be measured by the enthusiasm/motivation of the employee. However, the behavioral theories of leadership state that it is the behaviour of leaders that distinguishes them from their followers. In other words, leadership is a skill that can be taught. Likewise, the situational leadership theories state that a leader emerges to fit the situation. Different people will take the lead in different situations.
"Understand The Importance Of Leadership Styles And Behaviour Management Essay Hersey and Blanchard developed a Situational Leadership Model of management and leadership styles in order to present the ideal progression of a team from immaturity (stage 1) through to maturity (stage 4) during which management and leadership style progresses from directing(1), through the stages of increased management involvement of coaching (2) and supporting(3) to the final stage where the manager becomes relatively removed – delegating (4). This is the point at which the team is almost self-sufficient and possibly contains at least one managerial/leadership successor. I have applied a Hersey-Blanchard type questionnaire to determine my own leadership style. The analysis of the responses showed that I have a slight tendency to be directing above supporting and delegating with a lesser inclination towards a coaching style of management.
