After the civil war ended, the United States of America was still being exposed to vast amounts of racism, while people continued to fight for equal rights and freedom. Slavery was officially over in 1865, but there was still no equality for the blacks. In place of having the Negroes enslaved, the former white slave owners and racists alike would instead continue to oppress them by further segregation and assault, while the white authorities turned a blind eye because they were often part of the problem. In society, they were viewed as second-class citizens; forced to use segregated areas of washrooms, entrances, restaurants, public transit, and recreational facilities; such as churches. The Great Depression was in full swing and money was hard to come by. In his book, ‘Of Mice and Men’, John Protested against the treatment of disabled and of racial minorities which was very present at that time. One of the characters, called Crooks, is black. In the 1930’s this was a very bad thing to be as black citizens were considered second class and were treated as such. If there was an argument between a black person and a white person, the white person was right.
Through his speech to the troops of the Third Army, one can learn a lot about him. His aggressiveness probably being the one most notice first. One will also realize how deep his hatred for cowards really goes. He would not put up with them and even slapped two soldiers for it. That was one of the qualities that really intrigued me.
To Kill a Mockingbird: A Society full of Prejudices The novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" takes place in Maycomb is a town in the south of the United States, in Alabama. The population is divided by race and black people are considered a lower class, so they have no rights and are treated like scum. The story is told from the perspective of a little girl named Scout whose father, Atticus is a lawyer willing to defend a black man, for this reason the novel focuses on the case of Tom Robinson, because everyone knows that a black man does not have the chance to win in the court, but Atticus is putting himself and his family in a difficult situation. E. B. Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk (1903) contained perhaps the most eloquent statement ever written on being black in white America. The difficulties of their circumstances, Du Bois believed, create a double consciousness among Americans of African descent. The Souls of Black Folk: One of the major literary works of the twentieth century, it contained the first formal attack on Washington and his leadership. Du Bois attacked Washington for failing to stand up for political and civil rights and higher education for black Americans.
The NAACP’s primary goal during Du Bois’ time was to invalidate the decision of Plessy v. Ferguson. He was fond of Booker T. Washington, mentioned earlier, and many of his own views surrounded the concept of double consciousness. Du Bois believed that as a result of Plessy v. Ferguson African Americans began to judge themselves based on white standards, ultimately leading to the internal acceptance of inferiority. He describes the state of double consciousness as, “a peculiar sensation this double consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others…” (143). In other words, black people have reached a state of double consciousness where they look at themselves in the way that white people look at them.
His idea of slavery had changed very much by the time he wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Unfortunately, not everyone saw slavery from the same moral standpoint. Only a month after being published, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was banned by a library in Massachusetts, and many more did the same. Some white people who were not abolitionists immediately tagged it as trash and an attack on their beliefs, even though slavery had been abolished for a while by then. Blacks often thought of it as racist, even though it was generally accepted as an attack against racism.
In the late 19th century, state and local governments imposed restrictions on voting qualifications which left the African community economically and politically powerless and passed segregation laws, known as Jim Crow laws. Therefore the movement focused on three main areas of discrimination to address, racial segregation, education, and voting rights. Racial segregation is the separation of humans into ethnic groups. Segregation affected many African-Americans day-to-day life, forcing them to go to separate restaurants, water fountains, public toilets, schools, and even making them ride the back of the bus. During the period of his life became consumer discrimination, which is where the white consumers would not buy products either invented or produced by Negros. Morgan was the inventor of our current gas masks to be used in case of chemical warfare and he also invented the stoplight. So here is kind of contradictory that even though he hates the British Empire, but he still work for them, and these action has reflect the definition of ambivalence. * The reason why I choose “D. antipathy” is because base on the same quote I found in the paragraph 2, he directly blame all the environment he had. He hate the people, hate his imperial country Britain, and he job. So I use to think that since he has such dislike about everything, apathy should be the correct answer.
