“Tonight, you must go to a new math academy at 10 p.m. After that, don’t forget to study math, science, social studies, and others, ok? Do not make any mistakes.” Parents often say these to their children in South Korea. Why is that? It is because they want their children to enter a good university and help them succeed. So that is why many students are studying over 10 p.m. and get to rest for only 5-10 minutes. Even though some parents think that this is the right way, I disagree. The Korean education system is destroying the students and is bringing a lot of side effects. First, students study over their grades. Learning ahead is not a bad thing to do, but doing that too much rings brings defects usually. Whenever students study over their grades ahead, most of them do not listen to class completely. It is because they think they know everything specifically. That is why they are also lazy in school activities. However, if they do like this, their scores would become bad and the purpose of going to school would decrease. Second, there is too much private education. According to the National Statistical Office, in 2010, each household used average of 175, 400 won on private education (“Private”). Also, because of over-education, many students became stressed. Nowadays, students are forced to study (“PROBLEMS”). Furthermore, a lot of students study for over 14 hours in average and are very tired (“Ethical”). Sometimes, they are scared of making mistakes because they think that they might get scolded (“Critical Thinking”). However, the worst defect is when students depend on private education. Depending on private education means that an individual cannot digest the information in his or her own way without hearing another person’s explanation.
