“Just an Average Day” Her day began like any other day, rising early to make her husband’s lunch and get him off to work. Then there was a quiet period, a time to sit and have a cup or two of coffee before the two year old awoke and started the harried day. There was a flurry of activities: laundry, feeding the baby, dishes, vacuuming and constantly trying to keep the toddler entertained. Noon arrived, and she wondered where the morning had gone. Suddenly it was time to get lunch ready and feed the baby again. More laundry and cleaning, all the while trying to think of what to make for supper. Naptime came. The baby rested and so did she. Her younger brother came over after school that day to see his nephew. She let him watch television while the baby slept. As her brother was watching TV, she smelled it. She sent him outside to see if something was burning. She did not see any smoke, but could smell it; it was strong, and nearby. Her brother returned and yelled for her to “grab the baby and get out!” She looked at him in disbelief, not sure of what he had just said. “The house is on fire!” he exclaimed. Instantly she understood, and her thoughts went to her child. She gathered him up in a blanket and headed for the front door. As she passed the kitchen, flames shot up the wall from behind the stove and refrigerator; she noticed how fast the flames had risen and felt their searing heat. She did not remember the fire trucks arriving. All the events had since blurred into a roar of sound and pictures, snapshots in time. She only recalled the car pulling up the driveway; her husband getting out as the firefighters were throwing furniture and clothes out the front door. She ran to him, frightened, her tears streaming.
