Childhood obesity rates are climbing and health critics are suggesting sugary foods and drinks are to blame. This may hold true, however, there are also other factors to consider. Whether or not the junky substances are eliminated, there will always be kids who will remain obese. Why? Well, genetics, lack of physical activity, depression/negative emotions, and drugs (medications) all contribute to obesity. Therefore, targeting only one area of a variety of influences does not eliminate the main problem itself. Besides, by cutting the supply of chips and soda at school, children will have it packed in their lunch anyway. The board can't cut the supply off from the homes of students. The people with the most influence over the children's weight are the parents. If the parents allow their kids access to the sugar, the kids will believe it is ok for them to eat. But what parents aren't doing is reinforcing the importance on healthy eating beginning at an early age. Many wait until it is too late and the unhealthy eating habits are already formed. Finally, soda/junk food should not be banned because several schools recieve revenue from the vending machines for athletics. This is a key point in the issue because exercise is an important factor of reducing obesity. If a school gets rid of it's vending machines to keep students healthy, they lose the money for athletics. But then children won't be getting their exercise and then there'll be a bigger problem. I can understand that the school is making it a priority to keep the students healthy, but I believe their interference is causing more problems than are being solved.
