Also, when Curley’s wife is talking to Lennie, Candy, and Crooks in Crooks bunk she states “I think I know where they all went even Curley”(37). Curley’s wife knows that her husband is unloyal to her when he goes with the workers to a cathouse. Because no other character in the novel shows jealousy and deceitful, Curley is a bad to be a good husband to his wife it makes her talk even with Lennie. Because Curley ignores his wife and does not let her talk to anybody, he takes part of the responsibility for his wife’s
On chapter eight, she hits a girl called Carly because she called Josie a ‘wog’. Since Carly’s dad was out of control, Josie calls her dad to defend herself since he is a barrister. This definitely makes the barbeque event pretty useless since both of them have broken their promise to keep out of each other’s lives. The eighth chapter gave us an idea that the barbeque even is useless between families; even though Michael has fled eighteen years ago. This event gives us another idea that we have no one better to rely on, than your family.
Mary Alice was also very unhappy when Grandma told her about buttering Bootsie’s paws. Mary Alice did not like that Bootsie became an independent cat because that meant the part of her company had left her and no longer yearned for her attention. Grandma wasn’t too fond of Halloween. That year, when Mary Alice was visiting, the word got around that a group of boys had been trashing people’s port-a-pottys. Grandma planned a steak out and they waited until the boys came around.
Josie resents Nonna’s interference in both hers’ and Mama’s lives and despises her grandmother for being set in her ways. Josie could not live with the fact that Nonna had been such a hypocrite, treating her mum the way she did. Josie and Mama have a close relationship and Josie doesn’t want anyone between them. One minute they love each other to bits and spend hours in deep and meaningful conversations and the next they will be fight about the most ridiculous things. Christina is unmarried
Mayella is rarely explained through out the novel so her background is kept short and simple, however you can see the great affect of not having a mother around has on her. Mayella consequence from not being vocal and telling the truth in To Kill a Mockingbird is one of personal growth. She does not learn how to take ownership for her actions neither does she learns how to stand up against her father. Mayella Ewell and her father Bob will always have the blood of Tom Robinson on their hands because of his abusiveness and because Mayella is complacent about her fathers angry
The only ones left are Crooks, Candy and Lennie. Curley’s wife comes looking for Curley and they treat her like an idiot ‘[You] think I don’t know where they all went? Even Curley, I know where they all went’ she says. We can see that she knows that they went to the whore house, even her newly married husband. This makes us sorry for her because Steinbeck portrays that Curley doesn’t care for their marriage he just carries on as if it doesn’t exist.
In the stories, A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner and The Jilting of Granny Weatherall by Katherine Anne Porter both women had different reactions to the similar situations of being rejected by their lover and losing a loved one. In Faulkner’s story, A Rose for Emily, the main character, Miss Emily, acted out irrationally when her lover, Homer, rejected her. All her life Emily was not able to have a chance with any suitors because her father always pushed them away. When she got older she began to loose her beauty and she felt she would never get married
Instead, a cleaner named Zulema from the social services comes to her house every week to clean for her. Zulema always tries to persuade Doris to move to Stafford house which is an old people’s home, but Doris despises the thought of Stafford house, ‘I don’t want to be stuck with a lot of old lasses’, this is humorous as she is an aged old aged lady herself, just like the people in Stafford house. She doesn’t consider herself as one of those ‘old lasses’. It’s as if throughout the play she is making gradual steps in deciding to die. She regrets not having children because her husband has died and now she feels isolated and lonely, as she doesn’t know many people anymore.
‘No one cares about me’ this makes the reader feel sorry for her as nobody cares about her and nobody wants to be with her. At Curley’s wife death the reader feels for her as when Lennie is touching her hair and gets harder and harder it says ‘her eyes were wild with terror’ which makes the reader feel bad as she only wanted somebody to talk to and when she finds someone to talk to she gets killed for just being nice and letting Lennie feel her hair. Curley has something to do with his wife wanting attention as he goes out to town every Saturday with the men and they go to the brothel while she sits at home and isn’t even allowed out just to the town. Curley also sort of traps Curley’s wife by not letting her speak to the men but his allowed to do what he wants. She only gets attention from Curley and she doesn’t even get much attention from him so wants to speak to others to make her feel less
The novel traces the psychological development of the American daughter and her final acceptance of the Chinese mother and what the Chinese mother stands for.
