Johnny Tremain Have you ever encountered any people of historical significance? In the book, Johnny Tremain, Johnny gets to meet several of them. The book is a historical fiction story, written by Esther Forbes. The setting is in Boston just before the American Revolution. Johnny Tremain, a silversmith, is drawn into the war after meeting Rab Silsbee who becomes his best friend. Rab introduces Johnny to the world of revolutionary politics allowing him to meet many historical figures such as John Hancock, Paul Revere, John Adams, and Samuel Adams. Johnny, working closely with Paul Revere and other revolutionists, finds a new life that changes and matures him. He helped to prepare Boston for the battle ahead. Johnny Tremain, one of the main characters in the book, is the protagonist in the story. He is a fourteen year old gifted apprentice of Mr. Lapham, a silversmith. Johnny’s personality is very negative in the early parts of the story. He displays arrogance, a quick temper, and even some cruelty. His experiences encountered throughout the story affect his personality in a positive way. Johnny’s life changes when a sudden accident leaves him unable to work as a silversmith. Humbly accepting a new job, he becomes involved with the American revolutionists. Through his courage and determination, he learns to overcome many obstacles in his way. He changes from a self-centered boy into a patriotic young man. Another main character in the book is Rab Silsbee. He is a sixteen year old boy who becomes Mayorak 2 Johnny’s model and guide. Rab is a very friendly young man who is nonjudgmental and open-minded. Because his parents died, Rab works for his Uncle Lorne, a Whig, at the Boston Observer, a local newspaper. He
