John F. Kennedy John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on the 29th May 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. John F. Kennedy was often referred to as ‘JFK’ by his friends and family, and is commonly referred to as JFK today. JFK had three brothers and five sisters. In September 1941 whilst war was raging across the world, particularly in Europe, JFK was medically disqualified from the US Army for his chronic lower back problems, he then joined the Navy. Kennedy was working in the office of the secretary of the Navy when the attack on Pearl Harbour occurred. John Kennedy ran for a seat in the House of Representatives in 1946, beating his republican opponent by a large margin, he served as a congressman for six years. In the 1952 election JFK beat his republican opponent for a seat in the Senate. In 1953 he was married to Jacqueline Bouvier. The following two years saw Kennedy become severely ill after multiple spinal operations, he received catholic last rites. In 1956 Kennedy was nominated for Vice President, but finished 2nd to Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. On January 2nd 1960, JFK initiated his campaign for President in the democratic election; his main opponents were Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon. JFK defeated Humphrey in Wisconsin and West Virginia and Morse in Maryland and Oregon. These victories demonstrated his broad popular appeal and at the democratic convention he gave his ‘‘New Frontier’’ speech. Kennedy now faced opposition from Lyndon B. Johnson which he overcame.
