John Dewey’s Educational Theories in Use Today John Dewey (1859-1952), was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer. Dewey’s three theories on education were; education must engage; education must be an inspiration; education is an interaction and social life. According to Dewey, in My Pedagogic Creed (1897) he states “To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself.” Dewey was believed that the student must take a hands on approach to learning and make a connection to their life. By allowing the student to take that approach the student is allowed to make a connection in their life which will aid in the learning. In a time where you have various ways to gain the education and knowledge are we still using the foundational elements Dewey wrote about in My Pedagogic Creed (1897) and The Child and the Curriculum (1902)? On a college campus courses are offered in a variety of settings a classroom, online format; and a hybrid format which is a combination of classroom and online, and a self-paced format. These formats were developed for the ease of the student by allowing the student to choose which format works for them. This could be said that the student is taking command of himself. In a classroom setting you have direct social interaction engaging with the instructor and other students. However you could be limited in learning by how the instructor teaches the material. If there is a subject that the instructor is not fond of they could gloss over it or make it sound not so important by the tone use to teach the material. In an online course an outline of the curriculum is provided but the learning technique is up to the student on how that material is learned. The instructor guides the student to learn for themselves but provides information along the way. It’s up to the student to decide if reading the
