Jim Hodges work uses nontraditional materials in his installations. He infuses his materials with meaning and emotion. One of the themes he addresses through his work is a theme of materiality. A few examples of this are seen in the 3d sculptural exhibit And Still This (Figure 1) and You (Figure 2). Hodges uses a wide variety of materials from normal day to day materials such as photos and silk flowers to extreme materials such as gold. There is a huge significance in the materials chosen as they reflect his “drive to explore and push himself beyond edges". In the artwork And Still This Hodges uses 23.5k and 24k gold leaf with Beva adhesive on Gessoed linen. The high price of gold makes this material choice very extreme. Rather than hanging each canvas up on a wall like traditional paintings he chose to display this piece on the floor creating a 3d sculpture. On one side you can see the beautiful gold leaf which has been cut away to possibly resemble a nature like scene. On the other side, the back side the viewer can see the plain canvas and wood frames. The beauty of a golden landscape contrasts with normal everyday linen and wood. This material choice and placement could be a implicit undertone of inner beauty. In the artwork titled You Hodges displays the importance that nature has on his creations. You looks like a cascading waterfall of flowers. The result is an artificial nature (silk flowers) vs. non artificial nature (cascading waterfall) 3d sculpture. This piece comes after a period of time where Hodges worked only in black and white. This was his first piece where color was re introduced into his artwork. The sculpture is mostly white with color interspersed so as to draw attention to the areas of color. Hodges also uses the negative space between the flowers which allows the viewer to see through it. Much like a natural waterfall
