Today’s contemporary architecture has a lot of focus on “organic architecture that tries to blend with the environment around it by being more curvy and sometimes incorporating plants into the structural design” as arthistoryarchive.com says. This type of architecture is focused around on bringing the outside in by using lots and lots of windows which was also a defining factor of the gothic cathedrals of the medieval era. The only main difference between the two is that the windows used in contemporary are to make everything seem very natural and in touch with nature while the windows in cathedral were seen a way of bringing in divine
Art Criticism Task By: YD The painting I chose is by Greg Conley, it’s called “The Path Chosen”. By looking at the painting you can tell that the artist used a lot of different techniques to make it look unique, realistic and attractive. The artist used the technique wet-in-wet to slightly blur the painting. He also used the technique dry brush which is the opposite of the wet in wet technique, for it makes things very crisp and hard edged; this technique makes features come forward. In addition he used the method flat wash which is using one solid color (yellow in this case) from top to bottom.
Does he do other types of art works? In his earlier years Julian had mainly done portraits of well-known people and others generally themed around music. Still seen today Julian also paints murals with acrylic paints, oil paintings, replicas of the works of masters and creates collages. Structural frame/ Artist practice What materials does he use, how does he use them? The only materials used in Julian Beever’s art works are chalk and masking tape.
The arms and legs along with the moving hips and shoulders of each figure come together to form an overarching theme of the “s” shape. Pietro masterfully uses the negative space to his advantage when creating the piece. His deep carvings create the necessary shadowing to give the feeling of depth and authenticity. The negative space created by the legs and arms let light through the sculpture and draws the eye to the left figure’s crotch. Since the sculpture was created as a fountain and the piece can also be viewed at any angle the sculpture may have been meant for a garden fountain.
Zen thought and Zen Buddhism continue to have a major influence on Japanese garden design through the arrangement, technique and skill of the artist or gardener. Many of the gardens in the culture of Japan are influenced by Zen Buddhism or Zen thought. Almost all Japanese gardens are made up of rocks, water, and plants, that are carefully arranged to give the perception of a natural setting. Even when manmade structures are added like buildings and bridges they are carefully placed into the design in a pleasing harmonious way. The portrayal of scenic nature is more than likely on a miniature scale, but sometimes are life size.
Similar to brushstroke, the line in Matisse’s painting is very fluid and smooth and creates solid figures by the boundaries between colors. In Kandinsky’s painting the lines are very coarse and random. Also, the spacing in the paintings is very different. In Matisse’s painting, the placement of the people is well balanced and spaced out throughout the painting. In addition, though Matisse’s colors are very flat, he creates space through the
The patterns used are nature inspired with things like plants and flowers and feathers all used. This suggests she is thinking about beautiful things and might just want to be amongst the natural world. Minjae Lee is a South Korean self-taught artist who produces Contemporary Portraits. He is a commissioned artist which means people pay him to produce pieces of art based on a brief. He uses line in his work to create sharp patterns which create fluidity in his work.
Andy Goldsworthy and Antony Gormley are two British sculptors that have created completely opposite material and conceptual practises. Where Goldsworthy makes his works using materials that are only natural, Gormley on the other hand uses his body to create sculptures that adventure the ideas of the human body, the physical space and the viewer’s space. Each artist has responded to interpreting the world around them differently, although each one of their art making has influenced my ideas for my art making. Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor who studied at Bradford College of Art (1974-1975) and Preston Polytechnic (1975-1978). He is a site specific ephemeral sculptor who expresses his love of nature through the use of sustainable site specific materials.
In “The Poet’s Fence”, 2004-2005, John Wolseley, Australian landscape artist, uses the natural textures and fine details of the environment, as well as bold and subtle tones to create a work which emphasises a sophisticated and effective artwork. This communicates a strong message of the contrast between man and nature. John Wolseley has his own unique practice and is deeply concerned with the environment hence all of his works are environmentally friendly, and in some way connected to his feelings towards the environment. His works challenge the viewer’s imagination and are aesthetically pleasing, using dramatic, complex drawings and sketches to create a bold, expressive artwork. Described as a nomad, John Wolseley might be more rightly known as a naturalist.
It is almost animated, in a way. In the tomb wall painting of Queen Nefertari, in the Valley of the Queens, Thebes, Egypt, we see an excellent example of frontalism. While the hands are not clasped but instead shown with quite elongated fingers, her head is turned to the side and the body is facing forward. The colors used are gold, red and white and very bold. In my own personal opinion, Egyptian sculpture is the most impressive of all of the art of the period.
