My view on the world was a selfish view. I didn’t care about current events, I thought school was lame and figuring you out was lame too. I put on more of a front than I actually really, truly believed in my heart. At church and youth, I wanted to seem like one of those really great, Godly, Christian girls you see around the church but I wasn’t, so I faked it. In March 2013, our close friend was put in the hospital under a coma for an unknown illness.
Jehovah Witnesses Jehovah Witnesses The religion of Jehovah Witnesses dates back to the late 1800’s. A man named Charles Taze Russell created a group called International Bible Students Association in 1872. Charles Taze Russell had a hard time believing what was being taught in the traditional Christianity. He did not believe in bad people going to hell and being tormented for all eternity, nor did he believe that the Father (God), the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit are all in one. Jehovah’s witnesses are more commonly associated with being a cult.

In the article selected, Couple Wins Suit, Doc Didn't Suggest Aborting Baby With Down Syndrome, the author, Rebecca Taylor, discusses a court case in Oregon in which Ariel and Deborah Levy filed a lawsuit against their doctor for failing to let them know that their daughter would be born with Down Syndrome. Taylor's subjectivity comes through in almost every word in type. Carefully chosen phrases such as "$2.9 million for saying you would have killed your child" (Taylor, 2012) leave no room for mistaking the authors opinions. Taylor communicates disdain for the subjects of her article in many ways. It is apparent what her personal beliefs are, even though they are never stated.
The church I was raised in did not worship in this way. In my mind I am thinking what in the world have I gotten myself into. We took our seats and the preacher walked to the pulpit and stated “if you love God and the things that he has done for you then you need to run”. After everyone finished carrying out his instructions he then began to deliver his sermon. In his sermon he did not include scripture.
As Nomi’s older sister Natasha begins to question their faith, Nomi lives in perpetual terror that her sister is going to hell. Their father is a strong believer; the church is what glues his soul together. And although their mother grew up in the community, she had always been an independent thinker, and could not watch her oldest daughter suffer for a lifetime in a place she hated, following a religion she could no longer identify with. After Nomi’s mother and Natasha leave East Village, Nomi is faced with living in a broken family, and begins to question her faith as well. While trying to avoid the sad existence that seems inevitable if she stays in the community, Nomi dreams of a life in the real world, but can’t seem to get up the courage it will take to leave.
It was her mistake, so she is going to take on her responsibility, and be a great parent for her unborn child. She said, “If it was my choice i would have got pregnant after college” (Duval). Luckily, her boyfriend, her family and friends were unexpectedly supportive of this major change in Harley’s life. Everyone preached to Harley about how tough it would be with having a baby, she didn’t think anything of it. The only worry in their minds was Harley and her junior year of high school; hoping and expecting she would finish
Terri Schiavo entered a persistent vegetative state in 1990 and would end up spending fifteen years of her life there. Doctors saw no hope for Terri and Michael, her husband, claimed it was his wife's wish to not be kept alive. Michael wanted her feeding tube removed, but Terri’s parents refused to let that happen. They hoped everyday that their daughter would somehow recover. Eventually, a bill was passed by George W. Bush, which gave hospitals the power to remove patients from life support.
Prayer in public schools is a controversial topic that has taken top-billing on many of Americans minds. In the article, Banning Prayer in Public Schools Has Led to America’s Demise by Gary Bergel states in the first paragraph, “On June 25, l962, 39 million students were forbidden to do what they and their predecessors had been doing since the founding of our nation – publicly calling upon the name of the Lord at the beginning of each school day.” Bergel is attempting to state that America has decreased in morals since this date as well as forbidding prayer at that time. These are the first two incorrect points of this article. They are by no means the only ones but these will be the two major points of contention addressed. First, the date Bergel uses is in reference to the court case of Engel V. Vitale in New York.
I had been raised mostly Southern Baptist and taught a lot of things I have grown to find absolutely disgusting and irrational. I wasn’t allowed to be friends with my best friend when I was 10 because she is biracial. I wasn’t allowed to be in Girl Scouts because of their affiliation with the Catholic Church. Gays would burn in Hell. Any belief system that wasn’t what I was being taught was wrong and it was my responsibility to lead them to the
