Cathedral “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is a short story of a blind man’s visit. There are three characters, the narrator, his wife, and the blind man Robert. Ten years ago, the narrator’s wife took a job in Seattle reading to Robert over the course of a summer. When her job ended, she and Robert decided to stay in touch via tapes. I am not sure if these are video tapes or just audio. I am going to guess the tapes are just audio because this was written in 1982, and I don’t know what technology they had in homes back then. Also, I assume audio because Robert is blind, therefore a video would have no effect on him over just hearing the sound. The first time I read it I had a lot of questions. After asking some and seeing a lot of questions answered on ANGEL, I was able to read “Cathedral” again and fully understand it this time with little no questions at all. The questions I will be answering will be ones that I have came up with on my own, or taken directly from the ANGEL classroom asked by other students in the class. Q. What causes this narcissism in the narrator? I believe that any narcissism from the narrator is out of jealousy that he has for his wife’s connection to the blind man. He feels like she should have her attention focused on him instead of Robert. Q. Did you find the relationship between the women and blind man a tad strange? Also, were you fascinated by the amount of things the blind man could do without any help? I did not find anything strange about the woman’s relationship with Robert. I am proud of them for staying in such good touch over the previous ten years. In this age, with all of the technology we have, it is very easy, but back thirty years ago, before the internet and cell phones, I imagine how difficult it could be to stay in contact with someone strictly on audio tapes. Sadly, yes I was fascinated and surprised by how independent Robert was. I had the same thoughts as the narrator in the respect of the blind needing a cane and dark glasses. I know a blind man personally and he uses a cane and has glasses so almost all, of my perspectives come from
