12/4/12 James Otis 1. James was the second child of thirteen children and was the first to survive early childhood. 2. He studied law at Harvard College, practiced in Plymouth, and settled in Boston where we became a trusted lawyer. 3. In 1756 he was appointed as a general in the vice admiralty court. 4. He converted from a conservative royal employee to a strong critic. 5. The newly chosen governor of Massachusetts, Sir Francis Bernard, ignored James Otis’s father as a potential choice for Chief Justice, which angered James Otis. 6. In 1761 he joined a group in Boston to fight against the renewal of the writs of assistance, which he had previously used in his position as a general. 7. He made an argument in a court case that lasted five hours, which he later lost. John Adams was in attendance. 8. Because of his argument in the court case, he became an instant celebrity. 9. James was elected to a seat in the legislature general court 10. He got together with Adams to enforce the Townshend Duties. 11. After an incident with a Boston custom-house official, he was beat on the head with a cane. 12. After he was beaten on the head he could no longer attend public meetings. 13. He was spent a lot of his time meandering in Boston streets 14. James was taunted by groups of people on the streets. 15. Otis died from a strike of lightning.
