After Andrea Yates gave birth to her fourth child, she attempted suicide by taking an overdose of sedatives. Due to insurance issues Andrea Yates was discharged from the hospital and prescribed some anti-depressants in which she did not take. Andrea attempted suicide for a second time in which she held a knife against her throat. Andrea reported that she heard voices telling her to get a knife. She then began to cut causing harm to herself by cutting herself.
She lived there along with cousins, and ended marrying David Lacks, known as Day. Henrietta’s sister Glady disapproved Day and Henrietta’s marriage. They had 5 children, Lawrence, Lucille, David, Deborah, and Joseph. Henrietta began getting severe pain so she went to Johns Hopkins, one the best hospital in the nation and had a colored ward. This had obviously been very difficult time and I was aware that the birth of a new baby within the family may have come with mixed emotions. SCENARIO Prior to the visit I had received a telephone handover from the new Mother’s midwife, who had explained this had been an uneventful pregnancy and straight forward delivery. However her sister had very recently given birth, which had tragically resulted in the baby dying shortly afterwards. The midwife explained this had created anxieties about her new baby and that whilst she appeared to doing okay it was something to be mindful of. Imagine if this person only had six months to live, and those would be the worst months they would ever have to experience. All anyone could do is watch as this person cried and yelled for someone to stop the miserable pain and agony. What if there was a way to stop the pain? Physician Assisted Suicide is a physician intentionally assisting a patient to terminate their life among their request.
Although Dorothea was not a psychologist or therapist of any kind she knew that improving conditions for the mentally ill would help them. In one of her testimonials to legislature she shared this “some may say these things cannot be remedied, these furious maniacs are not to be raised from these base conditions. Later we learn that her grandson has died, but because of her old age she continues thinking that he is alive. At the beginning of the story it is hard for reader to understand the reason of Phoenix Jackson’s perseverance go on dangerous path. However, despite the fact that climax comes near the story, the symbol of a worn path, which communicates many themes of this short story, doesn’t let reader be bored.
