Karen Hill Unit 3 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with children and young people 1. Understand the importance of promoting equality and diversity in work with children and young people 1.1 Identify the current legislation and codes of practice relevant to the promotion of equality and valuing of diversity At The Meadows Community Primary School there are a range of policies which set out guidelines and procedures for ensuring equality. These must take into account the rights of all individuals and groups within the school. Policies must also pay regard to the values and practice which are apart of all aspects of school life. It is important for myself to understand relevant legislation and it’s purpose, as this will help me in my role as a teaching assistant and make me aware of my responsibilities.
The definition of multiculturalism in the Webster’s Dictionary is: “of or relating to a social or educational theory that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than in only a mainstream culture” (Webster’s 2012). Reasons Multiculturalism should be integrated into America’s schools have been met with opposition. With the changing ethnic makeup of our society, Multicultural education is an idea that seeks to develop the same opportunities for all students; it is not geared only for the benefit of those from different racial, ethnic, and social-class groups, but it is also designed to help the middle to upper class white Americans (Banks, 2012). Ideally the goal of multicultural education is to restructure schools, retrain teachers and staff, so that all students will gain the knowledge, outlook, and abilities required to succeed in America. In order to achieve the acceptance of a multicultural curriculum in all grades and infrastructure of the educational system must adopt this.

The ideal was to establish a set of basic academic standards that all students should achieve, hold the schools accountable for meeting these standards for all students, ←and→ then give educators the choice of how to meet the standards. The way NCLB is currently being administered must be fixed, otherwise we will have both new ←and→ seasoned talented teachers leaving the profession in droves. Although reading ←and→ math tests would remain in the administration's proposal, schools could also include student performance in other subjects as part of overall measurements of progress. Critics say that the current education law has narrowed the curriculum for students:→ Many teachers zero in on math ←and→ reading at the expense of other subjects to help students prepare for the required tests. (Douglas) Students need a well-rounded education," the blueprint declares, and it cites disciplines including history, civics, foreign languages, and the arts.
Education systems all over the world can be more or less fit into two main groups; the Liberals (Western countries) and the Functionalists (East Asian countries). The Liberal system has been the educational ideal of many Western countries including Great Britain and the USA. Liberal education seeks to develop analytical skills and critical thinking in students to prepare them to live life in all its dimensions. The liberals aim to liberate students from the immediate pragmatic concerns of society in education. On the other hand, Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia have their functionalist system.

One of the considerately biggest places for opportunities is United States and education is the biggest way to accomplish one's dreams, but when someone moves to the U.S. from another country, not being fluent in English can be a huge barrier to being able to accomplish what one wants, and being successful in the educational system. Therefore, the people who control the education system have set specific standards in order to teach students who are learning the English language. In order to prompt the development of English Language development set standards have been initiated that keep up with the subjects that the other students who speak English are learning and are being tested on. The idea of that is great and should promote both content
