It safeguarded our standing in the world. Mike Rose's school offered quite the opposite. It was a haven for long standing views on school being selective as to whom actually deserved the education. The only hope of the present school system is a few dedicated professionals. They could see the errors of the future and grasp to what made the system work in the past.

Also he explains how marketing on the school systems is keeping the adults nowadays very “childish” or young in the mind. (Gatto 149) According to Gatto if you strip children of all of their independence, and only develop their trivial emotions, they would never truly grow up. (Gatto 154).
Outline and Assess Functionalist Explanations of the Relationship Between Education and Work (50 Marks) A Functionalist view on education is that it is a meritocratic system that gives everyone who enters into it an equal opportunity for success within and after full time education. One of the main reasons for this is because of a national curriculum that all state schools have to follow, meaning that there is a minimum standard of education and that everyone gets taught the same things. Furthermore, Functionalists see education as a way of maintaining society by socialising young people in a specific way, by creating competition, levels of success and equality of opportunity. In addition to this socialisation, education is also important for teaching such vital skills as learning about the basics of the economy and giving young people a basic knowledge of certain things that will help them within employment, such as literacy, numeracy and IT. Education is also one of the main influences on role allocation within society; allocating people to the most appropriate jobs for their talent, using examinations and their results from these.
Sociologists like Cultural deprivation theorists would agree with this statement.They believe that parental interests and attitudes to education influence working class childrens' attainment levels, this can be positive or negative influence.They would argue that children look upon their parents as role models, .When they see their parents act in a negative way regarding rules, school and work, they often follow in their footsteps. This could result in the children developing an Anti-School subculture. Studies do show that the working class do considerably worse than the middle class, in many aspects of education. Children in the middle class are more likely to struggle in school, more likely to underachieve at GCSE level and more likely to be expelled and excluded than middle class students. Cultural deprivation theorists would blame this on the lack of parental guidence and encouragment to succeed in education.
The education system creates this effectively by teaching subjects such as history, which enables children to see the link between themselves and wider society. Durkheim argued that school serves a function that cannot be provided the family or peer groups and that individuals must learn to cooperate with those who are neither family nor friends, and he says the school is a place where these skills can be learned. Sticking with the functionalist view of the education system, Durkheim believed that school rules should be strictly enforced and that punishments be carried out to the full so it is made clear to the offenders that their actions were wrong. He believes that it is this way that pupils will learn what is wrong in society as a whole. Functionalist Talcott Parsons developed Durkheim’s ideas, and argued that

This approach could be classed as too deterministic. It makes an assumption that students will automatically embrace the values taught in school. In reality some students will and some won’t. Also the values taught are ethnocentric and pupils from different cultures often reject and rebel against this. A functionalist view could also be criticised by suggesting all pupils are not offered an equal chance to succeed, and therefore education is not meritocratic.
Being an adult is all about being responsible for your own actions, not blaming others and finally finding solutions for your own problems. The purpose of a student is to work with other students collaboratively in achieving goals and learning objectives. Misconduct in disruptive behavior, harassment, and stalking, including fighting and bringing weapons to campus will not be tolerated. * Important behaviors for an ethical leaner or current University of Phoenix would include treating people in such a way as to respect their freedom and individuality. Americans take their freedom for granted so much, that I truly believe that only people who have had their freedoms greatly reduced, such as those who have served in the military, know exactly what it means to be free.
It is for the purpose of labeling peers and deciphering which children are inferior, it is the social aspect of schooling. Lastly, the propaedeutic function teaches a minimal amount of children to manage the population to that the government can continue without being challenged. Initially I was taken aback while reading Gatto’s article, particularly in regards to Inglis six functions but upon further review and digging deep into my own personal experiences with the public education system, predominantly looking at my years spent in high school I would say there are some sad realities behind theses six
