Is Society Always a 'Throw-Away' Society

This essay will explore the claim that consumer society is always a throw-away society, by trying to understand consumption in all its forms in contemporary society; it will explore sociologists theories from Bauman, Veblen and Susman. It will also explore what happen’s when we no longer are interested in the products we bought and the rubbish we produced after consumption, do we simply throw away, are we creating conscience of the problem, is there a business in rubbish? Our society has moved away from consuming just the basic needs. Some social Scientist argue that consuming has become all about individual identity and self expression (Hetherington, Chapter 1, p20). Exploiting this idea, we find retailers selling to us that identity or self-expression in vast quantities, helped by the media. We know that this idea of capturing the consumer is not a contemporary one, for which Department Stores appeared in Europe in the 1860’s (Hetherington, Chapter 1, p37), what has changed in the contemporary society is the vast choice of products on offer, the disposable income, where do we go to do our shopping, just to name a few. There are various theories that explore this consumer activity and behavior, the first one we look at is “The Seduced and the Repressed” by Zygmunt Bauman (1988) (Hetherington, Chapter 1, p25). Bauman’s theory is saying that consumers are divided into two groups the “Seduced” and the “Repressed” The seduced are those in his opinion, that are in a better position to consume more broadly, for example, professionals, capitalists, all of those who have enough disposable income to buy into a lifestyle of their choice, to fit into this consumer society. In the seduced we also find those who can access cheap credit due to stable good paid jobs, allowing them to consume beyond their basic necessities. Bauman claims that this gives the “Seduced” a
