The welfare system in America is broken. It was originally designed to help people that cannot find jobs or cannot work but that is not exactly what it is doing. Not all people who are on welfare really need it and it is causing some people to be denied. Many families do not want to rely on the federal government because they do not want to be looked at as poor or that they cannot provide for their own family without extra help from others. A lot of people lie about what they do and do not do and conservatives and liberals ignore it when they know what is happening.
Second, Marin mentions that Americans have no culture and their life is ultimately dominated by there jobs and without the right job many Americans do not ever get what they look for in life. Even though Marin is not sure there actually is a American culture it is safe to say that people especially immigrants from different country's bring with them their own cultures, lifestyles, foods, and more. The American dream as some call it is nothing more then a thirst for
Kietrich Griffin September 4, 2012 Period 4 The average man is not willing to take total responsibility for himself because being free means that you are no longer under control and no longer have anyone else to help keep your life within a safe standard of living. Therefore, being free is something that our societies does not want because that would mean we would have to be responsible and most people today in this society have no concept of what being responsible truly is. Also, the society is afraid of being free due to the fact that to be free we would need to be free from the obligations of a job, a family, ect... and a job is what will help pay for their bills and the house that they live under, which brings safety. The quote is basically stating that, the average man would rather have the restriction of laws and be safe then to allow people to do whatever they wish. Therefore, Mencken’s observation does indeed apply to contemporary society because the majority of the society agree that the laws are here to keep us safe, not to restrict us and the reason for that is due to the reason that people feel that without laws, which would be true freedom, many would do things that would be illegal and deadly in our everyday life such as murder or robbery.
Those employers work overtime but did not get the pay that they deserve. Instead, employers who came late to work will not be tolerated. This has caused many employers to get stressed out, leading to suicide attempts. The reason may be because the labor costs in foreign countries are cheap compared to United States. However, I think it is wrong to take advantage of those employers’ lives by not providing those employers fairly.
Yes, Wal-Mart provides many uneducated Americans with job however it isn’t a job from which can make livable wage. Wal-Mart pays all their employees besides management minimum wage. With prices on the rise like they are today it is hard for a person to live off minimum wage which is currently 7 dollars and 25 cents in New York. Not to mention if you have kids it is virtually impossible to live off minimum wage and if you do it’s an unpleasing struggle. Another problem is that there is no growth in your field if you work at Wal-Mart.
Without an education life is much more difficult. Their are barley any jobs available for people without degrees in college or even their High school graduation certificate. Living off of minimum wage is almost impossible to do. But you can’t get a job that pays better then minimum wage with no degrees in school. This problem is all started from one thing, which is dropping out ; the biggest mistake anyone can make because it doesn’t make anything much easier.
Meanwhile, Asian as a ethnic race in American society, were lack of enough desire to correct the stereotypes and they didn’t have too much political right, only to know to work hard, study hard and come back home. The Asian also had not enough presence in media and they were forgotten by the mainstream
Social class in the United States is one topic that is not heavily discussed and is often avoided because the meaning of class has been removed from popular culture. On the contrary of popular belief, the controversial issues of class distinctions do in fact exist and also shapes and influences the lives of many people. In the article, “Class in America,” Gregory Mantsios displays that the economic outlook for most Americans is dependent on the class they were born into. He also uses obtained information and statistics to prove that the type of education and the future of your career are associated to the environment you were brought up in. One belief portrayed by the American Dream is that the United States is essentially classless, and the differences that do exist are not due to economic standing because regardless of your economic standing everyone is offered equal opportunities by the law.
This is because if the parents lacks this they wouldn't be able to encourage and help their child with their studies in the same way others do. This affects working class children more because their parents tend to be less well-educated and reduces the child's chance of achieving high in life as they may become less developed than another family leading onto my next point involving Bernstein. However, you this is criticisms by the fact working class parents cannot help their child because they have to work long and tiresome hours to live a decent life. Therefore, you cannot blame all working class parents for having a lack of interest if they are working to pay bills. Another cultural factor that might affect educational chances was argued by Bernstein.
The influence of the minority proves to in turn promote the government unresponsive to the needs of the vast majority of the population, prompting middle and lower class Americans to believe that their vote does not matter and cannot make a difference. Becoming politically active takes resources and skills, which is disproportionately bestowed on the economically well-off by higher education and occupational advancement. Americans with lower wages and education vote less due to their lack of these
