Curley’s wife, the only woman to appear in Of Mice and Men, seems initially to support George’s view of marriage. Dissatisfied with her marriage to a brutish man and bored with life on the ranch, she is constantly looking for excitement or trouble. In one of her more revealing moments, she threatens to have the black stable-hand lynched if he complains about her to the boss.
Who’s Really to Blame? In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, Connie the main character is considered as a self centered person who only cares about herself. She only has concerns about her looks and flirting with the older boys she meets. Connie knows about her looks and always make sure she looks her best. She prefers to spend more time with herself than with her family because of this she has a weak relationship with her parents.
Candy views Curley‟s Wife as inferior and is shown in Crooks‟ room when he says „you let this guy alone, don‟t you do no messin‟ with him,‟ this shows his view the Curley‟s Wife is a tart because when he says „messin‟ around‟ he means flirting which justifys his view on Curley‟s Wife. When Lupe gave Don Elias what Don Matilida couldn’t, she hated and resented Lupe and Juana even more because it was like a slap in the face. There was no Love in Don Elias and Dona Matilida’s marriage. Lupe and Miguel’s relationship is wonderful and picture perfect in the beginning of the book. Actually, it is always good.
He even has the nerve to say, “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife...you can count me out...” (124) Daisy is portrayed to be an innocent character yet the author shows us her dishonesty when she gives her heart to whoever will give her more attention. She is more in love with herself then either man. It doesn’t make a difference to her who she hurts, as long as she is happy and the center of attention. (127) Fitzgerald shows the lower class as bleak and portrays his lower class characters as pale and sick. An example of this is Myrtle, who wanted someone rich, no matter who he was.
* Theme- Love: characters are in a love triangle which they never escape. Ethan loves Mattie and wishes to reveal this to her, but he never truly can, and in the end they are stuck back at the Frome’s house with Zeena forever. This novel shows how Ethan maybe never even loved Zeena, he only married her because she helped Ethan’s mother while she was sick. Then Ethan has a small glimpse of love with Mattie, but it is taken away from him, and at the end of the story, it seems that their love is completely
While still married to Wilson, Myrtle does everything in her power to try and imitate the life she sees Tom and his friends living. She attempts to throw parties, similar to Gatsby, but they are almost all failures that demonstrate how much lower in class then Tom she really is. In fact, it is her lowness in class that is what keeps Tom from forming a real relationship with her. Although Tom tells Myrtle that the reason that they cannot form a solid relationship is that Daisy is catholic, "it's really his wife that is keeping them apart…" everyone, with exception to Myrtle and her sister, knows that is not the real reason. A person of Toms stature would never marry a women from the Valley of Ashes, and Myrtle is too naïve to realize that.
Infidelity today is the number one killer of marriages and relationships, and can be looked at as a symptom for non-working marriages. In the novel there was a lack of love and respect in the marriages, and there wasn’t anyone trying to fix their marriages either because they were around for their spouse’s money, or cheated because they were rich and felt could get away with it. There was one couple in particular that demonstrated these examples of infidelity in the novel. The couple was Daisy and Tom. Daisy stayed married to Tom because he was buying her happiness and his money, while deep down, she was really hurt and sad about the relationship.
The women in the novel are too shallow for our sympathy or admiration A character that can be described as being wholly shallow is Myrtle. We learn that she ‘lay down and cried’ after finding out her husband Wilson ‘borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in.’ Myrtle is distraught after finding out her husband is not rich nor a ‘gentleman’, as he made little effort on their wedding day. In the broader scheme of things, this should not matter; however Myrtle seems fixated on this and concludes from this one situation that their marriage is doomed. The suit can be seen as being representative of Wilson – he will always be reliant on others to survive in his sorrowful world, as seen when Wilson is close to begging Tom not to sell the car elsewhere. Throughout the passage, Miranda’s condescending ways and Adrian’s view of Miranda make Adrian feel as if he were inferior to her. Adrian’s outlook of Miranda as being clean becomes apparent when he sees “all [of] her loveliness… [making] him aware of his own grossness, his own inferiority” (Mais 63). Just by seeing Miranda, Adrian looked at himself to be less important, valuable, and worthy because she was “cleaner” than him. Later Adrian tries to change himself by buying shoes to impress Miranda, but finds out his efforts have fallen short because as Miranda sees the shoes she states, “Do you think I’m going to go out with you in them?” (Mais 68). Adrian feels as if no matter how hard he tries to change his “dirty” ways of life, such as not wearing shoes, Miranda will always be superior to him.
