Leonardo da Vinci, Virgin and child with St. Anne, c. 1507-1513, oil on wood panel This painting is realistic. It describes Virgin Mary, her mother and baby Jesus. Color It is noticed that Virgin Mary, the young woman in the middle of painting, dresses in much brighter color – red and light blue -- than other two people. Bright clothes suggests the emphasis of the painting should be put on the young woman. This thought is also consistent with light direction. From the left upper part to the right lower part, the painting becomes darker. Brighter left upper part stresses the focus of the painting – the young woman once again. Space Leonardo had used a lot of space around three people. The ground, sky and mountain which are surrounding them provides the space. Balance In the upper part of the painting, the distribution of color and size provides the balance. The light color – sky has much bigger proportion than the dark tree. Since darker color is heavier than lighter color while larger form is heavier than small form, the light blue sky is painted in a much larger proportion than the black tree. In this way, balance is achieved. Movement Diagonal lines suggest movement. Virgin Mary’s hands is drawn to show movement that as if she wants to hold baby Jesus. Similarly, baby Jesus hands try to hold the lamb. At the same time, the lamb has shown some movement that it seems that it tries to get out of baby Jesus. Proportion From the painting attached, we can see that the number of people and animal are arranged in proportion. There are Virgin Mary and her mother in the left upper part, and baby Jesus and the lamb in the right lower part. The direction of eye sight also adds into the proportion that Virgin Mary and her mother look down whereas baby Jesus and lamb face up to Virgin Mary. Opinion When I first saw this painting, this gives me a warm
