Rachel Garcia November 21, 2010 Art 11 Comparison and Analysis of: Raphael’s the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints and The Buddha Seated in Meditation. The title of the painting that I choose for this assignment is entitled The Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints. This is a painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Rafael, circa 1504. The Madonna And Child is an alter piece of an oil painting that also uses gold on wood. The Madonna and Child is a piece that uses many techniques used during the Renaissance period such as one point perspective, balance, use of geometric design, and religious themes.
In comparing and contrasting Cimabue’s and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned, the artist’s main idea of Madonna sitting on the throne is the same, however the forms used greatly differ. Both artists paint with a Gothic and Byzantine style with noticeable halos on the angels and a gold background. When contrasting these two pieces of art, the main difference is the placement of the figures of Madonna in each painting. In Cimabue’s, the Madonna looks as if she is sitting solidly, and the angels appear to be “stacked” around her in parallel form. In Giotto’s artwork, the angels in front appear closer, as the angels in the back row seem farther away giving an appearance of surrounding the Madonna.
These areas are very small, but both of the breaks in the branches move inward at a diagonal, creating a triangle that points to the young couple, the young woman in particular. The way her arms are up over her head also creates another shape of a triangle, which is continued through Daphnis’ back down into the bottom right corner, and on the other end, follows the line of the rock upon which she is seated into the bottom left. The entire composition creates movement that all draws the eye towards the center, where Chloe sits gazing down at Daphnis. The geometric shapes, colors, and placements also give the painting a good sense of balance. After
-Mary is once again wearing her traditional clothing of a red under garment and blue over cloak and skirt. -Baby Jesus’ expression is extremely dramatic and ambiguous as he either looks at this crucifix disapprovingly or perhaps like his mother in concentration. -The shading on the two children’s bodies excellently defines the shape of a baby especially visible in Jesus’ stubby legs. -From the way Raphael has painted St. John in comparison to Baby Jesus it is evident he is older than his cousin seated on his mother’s lap. -In this version of the Madonna and Child, Mary is not seated on any throne, instead she is seated on the floor suggesting she is one with nature, most probably the way Raphael saw the Madonna.
It seems that Giotto used Ciambue’s work as a framework for his painting, and improved upon it. In Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned, the body of the Virgin Mary is full and assertive. Her clothing drapes in such a way that it seems to cling to her body. Giotto emphasizes this by creatively outlining the bosom of Mary with the silk drapery. The Virgin and Child are also the most prominent figures in the painting.
Allison proved the art is subjective. She loves a mural of Jesus painting at the Jordan River done on the wall. She could not take her eyes off the Jesus painting. “I took the notion that art should surprise astonish, and hopefully make you think something you had not thought until you saw it.” (42) The example clearly express about the Author’s personal opinion about art, she thinks art should be always impress people. She saw an ad in all the magazines that a small child from high in the air dropping toward the upraised arm, and she felt so horrible about the ad.
This sunlight reaches up to the ceilings and lights up the cream brick at the peak of the vault. This provides the area with a feeling of depth, giving the visitor the sense of being in a much larger space than they actually are. On the left and right sides of the space are the entrances into the union. These doorways are accented with the use of tall arches that extend up into the ceiling, not only adding to the feeling of depth but adding to the beauty of the area as
 The statue is representing Mary and she’s supporting Jesus with both hands, while sitting on a stool. The word Majesty in the title suggests that these two figures belong to a royal family because they represent Christianity.  Mary and Jesus are important figures in Christian religion, this statue has been carried in church processions.  The statue seems to be stiff sitting on a stool because the way Mary’s holding Jesus with her both hands. T he shape of her hands is not real which makes the figure look rigid.

“To bring the young lambs to the fold.” It was not said as a literal statement more so comparing the kids to lambs and the fold to salvation. Langston’s aunt tells him to go to Jesus she did not mean it in the sense that he really was going to see him in flesh. The aunt also says “Langston why don’t you come? Why don’t you come and be saved? Oh lamb of God!
