“The Internet is the foremost battleground for free speech in the 21st century, and protecting our Internet freedom is essential…” (Save the Internet Coalition, 2013). We, as American’s, have a right to free speech, and free speech on the internet should not be regulated any differently. The internet provides an outlet. It allows people to express their thoughts, opinions, feelings, and views. The internet helps bring people together, allowing us to interact with loved ones across the globe. “An uncensored Internet is a critical indicator of a nation's commitment to free speech and a tool to keep that freedom alive. Keeping America's Internet uncensored is vital to protect and perpetuate free speech.” (Shapiro, 2013). What about children and censorship? That responsibility should be on the parent. There are numerous programs, many available for free from internet providers, that allow parents to control their children’s internet experience. These programs give parents the necessary tools to protect their children online, including their email. It is my social responsibility to act civil when posting on a public forum. We live in a diverse society and everyone has their own opinion. I need to respect those opinions whether or not I agree with them. We should censor ourselves and be responsible in what we post.
