On October 7th, 1989 one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes was committed against Laramie, Wisconsin resident, Matthew Shepard. Two other Laramie natives, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, abducted Matthew and drove him to a remote area east of Laramie. The victim was tied to a fence where McKinney and Henderson severely assaulted him, and attacked him with the butt of a pistol. Matthew was beaten and left to die in the cold of the night. For almost eighteen hours, Matthew remained almost lifeless to the fence until he was found by a bicyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. The cyclist reported that the only life-like part of the man was his hair, and his breathing was almost undetectable. The Laramie Project invites several theoretical questions which can be used to understand the citizens of Laramie, the members of the Tectonic Theater Project, and the format of the play as a whole. The questions, developed from Joyce Hart’s “Critical Essay on The Laramie Project” and “The Staged Documentary” by Robert Brustein, are as follows: * 1. Does Kaufman exaggerate the facts in the play? What is fiction, what is nonfiction? * 2. While the play demonstrates a good versus evil tone, which will prevail in the end? Will the town’s attitude overshadow the tragedy of Shepard’s murder? * 3. When is the idea of Laramie as an innocent, peaceful town contradicted? * 4. Are the Majority of Laramie citizens homophobic or do they mourn Shepard? * 5. What foreshadowing in the play suggests that other macabre events have occurred in Laramie? * 6. Are there occurrences where Kaufman manipulates the story to make it more emotionally effective to the reader? * 7. In what instances does the crime scene create an emotional impact, either on the members of Tectonic Theater Project or the reader? * 8. What ideas introduced by those
