The Brittany Spaniel In January of 2009 I went to my local shelter looking for a puppy. I looked in all the kennels to find the perfect one for me. While walking I came across a cute little puppy sitting in a corner of her kennel as calm as she could be looking at me with big brown eyes. I fell in love with this puppy and adopted her on the spot. I did not know what breed she was but the shelter informed me that she was a Springer Spaniel. Later that night when I got home I started researching the breed and realized that the shelter was wrong and she was actually a Brittany Spaniel. I soon learned the history, temperaments, and appearance of the breed. The Brittany Spaniel originally was found in Breton, France. In a painting by Oudry in the early 1700s there is a portrait of a tail-less spaniel about the size and color of a Brittany that is pointing at a partridge. The Brittany was named for the French province of Brittany and may be the a result of crossing the Orange and White Setter. The breed soon became popular with local poachers in the 1800’s because of its agility and small size and its extraordinary ability to point and flush the birds, combined with a desire to retrieve and their willingness to work. As of today, the Brittany has become the most popular of the "pointing" breeds in the United States. Pointing breeds are dogs that will go out hunting with their master. Their job is to sniff out birds and the also retrieve them, which is not common with most of the pointer breeds. The Brittany also known as the "Britt" also fits well into a common household, being affectionate and friendly. They are a medium statured dog with a love of the outdoors, being agile and compact they can fit into an urban household but needs to be well exercised. This is a dog whose first love is bird hunting, is an independent dog and a free thinker. It loves nothing
