Some may be a few simple words. They are formed by happiness or sadness, and sometimes adventure. Not everyone in the world accepts them so they have to be hidden from the eye. What am I talking about? Tattoos, a story told from the skin that says a thousand words. Today I’d like to talk about the history of tattoos, explain the process of getting one; and tell the story behind one of my favorite tattoos. History: The earliest evidence was found in Egypt and was present on several female mummies dated to 2000 B.C. (Lineberry,2007). Following the more recent discovery of the Iceman from the area of the Italian-Austrian border in 1991 and his tattoo patterns, this date has been pushed back a further thousand years when he was carbon-dated at around 5,200 years old(Lineberry, 2007). The Process: Getting a tattoo is a great experience, whether it’s planned or unplanned. If you are getting a tattoo that is planned it is less time consuming because you talk with a tattooist about what you want, he or she will either make up a drawing for you or you can pick one out yourself and then they can set up an appointment for you to come in. If you are doing a walk – in tattoo it is usually more time consuming due to people ahead of you getting a tattoo, then you have to wait for an artist to meet with to draw up the tattoo. There are three different types of needles, a 35 mm gauge which is used for outlining the tattoo; a 25mm-30mm gauge for the detailing of the tattoo; and a 20mm gauge for shading gray areas. The time of the tattoo depends on the size and the design. My Favorite Tattoo: I have three tattoos, a dolphin on my ankle with my name; a dove on my right side of my rib cage; and
