It was a sad day for the Sioux with many tears shed and many prayers sent. As time went by the great buffalo was almost driven to extinction. Unfortunately I cannot blame the white man entirely for this tragedy, as I and all Lakota Sioux many times killed to many buffalo to use and wasted much. With more and more white men pouring into our lands, by the 1850’s we were at conflict with one another mainly over land. Treaties were signed but rarely honored and many were nothing more than underhand ways to steal our land.
“Even in South Central Africa, which has always been exceedingly prolific in great herds of game, it is probable that all its quadrupeds taken together on an equal area would never have more than equaled the total number of buffalo in this country forty years ago.” (Hornady, 1889, p387). This great animal was the life’s blood of the Native American people and was used for everything from food to clothing and tools for just about any everyday job. Although North American Bison were hunted by Native Americans for centuries, western expansion in the 1800s brought the bison to near extinction. The great herd It is a well- known fact that Native Americans hunted the bison for thousands of years with what seemed to be no impact on the enormous population of the great herd. Archeological studies have uncovered proof that Native Americans used virtually every part of the bison for almost all aspects of everyday life, from clothing to shelter and tools, even for jewelry.

How does his vision of the settling of the West evolve of the decades? Manifest Destiny is defined as the historical belief that the United States is destined, even divinely ordained, to expand across the North American continent. This belief began with entrepreneurial mind-frame Easterners and permeated through all routes to the West. Among the young men traveling West was an unofficial scout for Johnston’s Army; William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Cody, an ordinary young man, developed and matured into an American cultural hero through the use of deep-seated ideologies present in his infamous Wild West Show.
When I was little I knew of two types of heroes. The knights or princes in the fairy tales I read about that would rescue a damsel in distress and live happily ever after. The other kind of heroes I knew of were the real life heroes. My great uncle Ronnie was my hero when I was younger because of everything he did during his life. My uncle fought in World War Two as a member of the 42nd Rainbow Division.
