Reflective Paper-Carter President Jimmy Carter’s statement “We are not alone in our worry about both the physical aspects of aging and the prejudice that exists toward the elderly, which is similar to racism or sexism. What makes it different is that the prejudice also exists among those of us who are either within this group or rapidly approaching it” in his book “The Virtues of Aging”. This is a telling revelation of how not only the general public views our older generation, but also how the older generation view themselves. Whereas, the older generation was once looked upon with respect, they are now ignored. Many people, including the older generation, feel that the older generation is a burden on society.
Even those who view the inherent inequalities of the American system, however, and argue that minorities are in some need of institutionalized help to overcome systemic problems also see the policies Affirmative Action as more of a hindrance than a help. This essay will argue that while certainly biases and inequalities exist in American society, and that members of minority populations are in need of some type of assistance in education and job placement
Nowadays, Puerto Ricans are having the same problems as the African Americans did before with the North Americans in terms of the use of English. Something similar is happening to Puerto Rican society and their education towards English. North American people think we do not know how to speak it because we are stupid and not clever. We can speak it, not like them, but we can communicate with them. The main reason for a language is to communicate.
In this short essay I will define institutional racism, its history in American and who it mostly affects. Institutional racism also known as institutional oppression refers to racism perpetrated by government entities, major cooperation’s, schools, the courts or the military (Moore 2008). Unlike the racism perpetrated by individuals, institutional racism has the power to negatively affect the bulk of people belonging to a minority group. This form of racism still persists in America because dominant groups are unwilling to share or give up the benefits inherited from past generations. Through numerous examples, Institutional Racism demonstrates how inequality and racial exclusion are embedded within the fabric of American society.
Hispanics also believe that their employers in the community do not treat them fairly and do not see them as equals in the community. They fill that the community discriminates against them, with racial slurs” such as your nothing but a stupid Mexican or wet back” This cause's the Hispanic community to withdraw from society and form a community within a community which they think is also another form of discrimination. Hispanics also believe that they’re taking advantage of by
Our society already possesses the hate, discrimination, racism, prejudice, and religious ridicule it can handle, so why continue to emit these negative and non-productive qualities that can lead this country in a more destructive downfall. America is known to be one of the most dominant countries in the world, so if we ‘lead by example’ how do you think the rest of the world views us?...shouldn’t our “example” exude that of a positive influence? To denounce another human being because they don’t look like you or love someone of the same sex is beyond me. What the LGBT community is asking for is for not for everyone to endorse their lifestyle and mimic them or their situation, but rather to accept the change that’s occurring and to have respect and acknowledgement of their situation which is evidently different from the traditional
Throughout the United States of America, racism is a lingering problem that everybody somewhat faces. Even though it may be more apparent in some places than others, racism still has an effect on everyone. It may be a subconscious stereotype or a bad feeling about a certain person solely based on their race that affects individuals in our country. We tend to feel more comfortable in front of people we look and act like rather than strangers who may or may not be different from you. Instead of people feeling safe while walking through the streets they create a sense of worry for themselves by what they believe of others who look different from themselves.
Dehumanizing and derogatory remarks, such as those made by Rob and Arnie, reduce the personhood of all transgendered people and need to come to an end. In order for these cruel remarks to cease, society is going to have to change. As of now some may find people of transgender to be “disgusting” simply because they are different. Until they are seen as human beings not “freaks” harassment will continue. Discrimination has been seen throughout American history.
Our impression of ourselves may be influenced by other people's opinions of us, but other factors, which are determined by the society around us, contribute towards our impression of who we are. Age Discrimination against people on the basis of their age has become so widespread that the government is drawing up new laws to counter it. Media portrayals of the young and the old suffer from strong stereotypes that affect the way both groups view themselves and each other. Children and teenagers are often characterised as out-of-control, inconsiderate trouble-makers. Old people tend to be stereotyped as frail, forgetful and incapable.
They think that they system has it in for them and is biased to their ethnicity. That is just one end of the spectrum then we have the people who feel they are being treated no matter what the race. However the people who argue that the system is fair regardless make the comment that its sad to say but the minorities are the ones who are causing the most havoc. They do point out that a main reason for this is the socioeconomic status of a lot of minorities in the United States. They are having a hard time just getting by because they are living in poverty, unemployment, dysfunctional family life and no structure to their everyday life.
