Individual Freedoms In Society The relationship between the individual and society has been questioned by the great thinkers and philosophers all the way back to Plato in The Republic. As society changes and develops the debate continues. The rights of the individual against the rights of society is a question that differentiates many of the political parties all over the world. It is an issue that effects everyone even when they do not realize it. A system that focuses solely on the individual is anarchy, where anyone can do what ever they want, but a system that focuses solely on society can be very restrictive and tyrannical, just as George Orwell envisioned in his book 1984. When it comes to the practical application of individualism in society most would agree that if there were no individual rights we would live as prisoners, but some people feel that as individuals we contribute most to society when we focus on our own aspirations and morales. I believe that a society that protects the rights of people to be expressive and free but restricts the rights of people in areas that concern greed and self interest is a society that benefits people as a whole. Some writers such as Emerson believe in a society centered around the individual. Emerson states in “self-reliance” that “…consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” (265). This suggests that conformity is a burden on society as a whole by not allowing people to become the best they can be, and although this can be true Emerson has a tendency to romanticize the human moral fiber and composition. He seems to overlook the potential of human greed and corruption. Just as our primitive ancestors needed to be the fastest, smartest and best hunters in order to maintain survival, with little care of the effect on other groups or tribes, many will do the same in acquisitions of property and wealth.
