Erdrich uses character to show that blood relation doesn’t mean love. The birth mother of the narrator shows no love to her child from birth. When asked if she wants to try and save her disfigured child, she answers with a swift “No!” However, Betty, the janitor at the hospital, nurses the child, Linda, and decides she would keep it with out even being asked. Betty and her husband Albert begin to try to raise and perfect Linda. They wake her up early and help her stretch her legs in hope that they will one day be straight/normal.
Everyone gets lonely now and then for reason maybe even unknown to ourselves. In the story "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, 3 characters face being lonesome throughout the book. Candy, Crooks and Curley's Wife are the ones facing this problem. Candy feels like he's not useful and he's a burden to other and Crooks says he's being discriminated against for be black. Whereas Curley's wife feels lonely because she IS alone with nothing to but sit in her house and has no one to talk to and gains sympathy based off that.
Who knows does not even show the slightest care for her husband’s feelings and plans, as she spent the day in bed chatting endlessly with a friend she met while on the trip to Washington. To add salt to injury, she confessed to him that all the money that he has been pouring on her was nothing but wastage of his resources. She also confessed to him that she did not love him at all. Elena went to a lady who she called the Grandma therapist. Most of the time she didn’t tell her much because she knew she was the only one Dora could trust but the Grandma therapist can sense her sadness and explained to Elena that many people carry sadness with them but sometimes they need to be able to rest and put it down. After her appointment with her therapist, Elena came home to an empty house and Jimmy showed up at the door. He apologizes for the way he acted but asked to go upstairs in Dora’s room. After looking around a little bit he removed a clock from the wall and found a bag of small white pills.
I believe John had a genuine concern and love toward his wife but not wise in his treatments of her mental health. He missed the mark in his Isolation treatments toward his wife mental condition. As the Author cites “John does not know how much I really suffer, he knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him”. Moreover, John tried very hard to make his wife comfortable at the house even having his sister help, although she didn’t like it. “There comes John's sister.
Throughout her childhood, Lucy had to face with children staring at her differently. Although she says “I was vain and proud when it came to wanting to be different from everyone else”(25), she loved being special. It was very hard for her to accept the way she looked after having all those surgeries and also having cancer. While being in the hospital, Lucy discovered that some of the children were better off staying at the hospital then being at home. Grealy states “Some of the other visiting parents…felt sorry for my lack of visitors..(38)”.
Without knowing how to read and write the world just passes you by as if nothing had a meaning. Knowing how to read is a very critical asset in your life. For instance, in the story Kozol reads a letter to the mother from the hospital about her child having lead poisoning. The mom does not know how to read, and if no one would have read it to her the paper would of just been another addition to her unread mail. As you can see what is the point of the hospital sending her very important news about her kid’s health if she could not read the letter (Kozol 257)?

Albert does not allow Celie to see Shug Avery sing at the Juke Joint, and forces her to stay home.
She is the most caring and giving woman you could ever meet. This is all why facing the fact that I could possibly loose her so soon was a very scary time in my life. It was a couple years ago, I was about ten or eleven, maybe younger, young enough for my mother to keep my brother and I in the dark about the whole matter until it was almost over. My grandmother was going to the doctors a lot, I thought nothing of it because it was normal with her asthma and other medical conditions. What wasn’t normal was that she was sad, very sad.
The Cousin Obed Ramotswe’s cousin had a good influence on Precious Ramatswe. Throughout the novel we learn how strong their relationship was and how the cousin helped her to develop. The cousin was married, but when her husband found out she could not have children they divorced. She went to live with her mother in a very small three-walled room. Her mother was very disappointed in her and treated her without respect or caring.
