Policies and procedures are put in place so that there are rules and boundaries to make sure that people know how to work in the setting and what is expected of them to prevent harm and danger to others in the work setting. The Early Years Foundation framework provides assurance to parents that the early years providers that they choose will keep their children safe. There are also legal requirements that relate to welfare. These include the Childcare Act 2006. This is essential in order to safeguard the children within our setting. We only hold information about the children that is important for us and their personal welfare. For example this can include, medication records, allergies, parents and full names. When information needs to be passed on and shared with other professionals then we need to ensure that we are complying with the data protection act. This act sets out clear guidelines which can be followed effectively in order to make sure that individuals private information does not get obtained by unnecessary people.
This can be done during planning by linking activities to the EYFS in order to establish that the child will have the opportunity to meet their next steps in development by taking part in the activity. All staff are legally obliged to have a duty of care, and always have the children’s, staff’s and parents/carer’s health and safety in mind. It is important that all staff working in a care setting or enviroment excersice a duty of care within the premisis. Children and young people are classed as vunerable as they have not yet developed the physical and cognitive capacity to care for themselves. Practitioners legally need to put in place procedures to keep children safe within the setting. Duty of care means to so far as reasonable possible look after a child young person and protect them from harm under obligation of the law.
The wrong person could receive the information and put the adult and child’s safety at risk. • Every matter relating to safe guarding is confidential. • The staffs at the work settings need to know that they have professional responsibility to share information with other agencies in order to safe guard children. • The head of the centre or the designated member of staff will disclose any information about child to other member of staff on a need to know basis only. • All the staff at the work setting aim to ensure that all the parents and carers can share their information with confidence that will be used to enhance the welfare of their children • Development records ( observation, planning ,photographs,….)
They must protect the identity of the child they work with and that of their families and carers. They must do everything in their power to protect the privacy of every child and adult. This can be done by keeping their personal information safe and secure. They can pass it on those who have authorised and legitimate reason to have the information only after they have permission signing a consent form. If parents refuse permission then the school would not be able to pass on the information even if it involves a behavioural specialist working with a child who has special needs.
Safeguarding and promoting Children’s Welfare Every child receives and enjoys challenging learning and development experiences that meets their individual needs and make sure they are safe. Child minders must safeguard children at all times if abuse is suspected it must be reported and I must record it. There is a strict rule that needs to be followed concerning children being picked up from school and if parents cannot pick their children up, meaning someone else picking them up, the school needs to know to avoid any risks of child abduction. Children wait in the school entrance following after school activities, until the correct person arrive to collect the pupil. The duties of supervisory staff e.g. Teaching Assistants are to make themselves familiar with the H+S Act and any other safety issues relevant to their area of work. The School treats Health and Safety seriously, from the playground to the classrooms, the people in the setting are made aware of the risks and told that possible risks are also laminated and put on the walls as an extra reminder of any risks there may be.
