In Act 1 of ‘An Inspector Calls’ how does JB Priestly use dramatic devices to convey his concerns and ideas to the members of the audience, as well as interest and involve them in the play? ‘An Inspector Calls’ is a play written by English dramatist JB Priestly in 1945. He was socialist who had concerns about social responsibility and awareness of political divides. The message explored throughout the play, is the effect of inequality and the consequences of mistreating other. Additionally, not taking responsibility for your own actions. In the beginning of the play the audience find out about the suicide of a working-class girl (Eva Smith).within 3 acts of the story is unravelled. She had been miss-treated by the (Birling’s), a middle-class family who think highly of themselves and are extremely selfish. The truth about the girl’s death is revealed through a mysterious Inspector called Google. Priestly shows how a chain of events can be started by just one person’s actions. This gives the audience the message that we should consider carefully the consequences of our actions because it may result in tragic ends. Throughout the play, many themes are explored alongside social responsibility and inequality. For example, age (the difference between younger and older generation0, guilt, deceit and greed. The dates 1912 and 1945 are important because 1912 was a point in history where a difference between the lifestyles of the rich and the poor had expanded. The factory owners at that time were extremely rich and lived happily within their extravagant lifestyles while they abused their employee’s rights and paid them minimum wage. Also within this time period women were usually treated like children by men and also treated as if they were property and lacked the right to vote at that time.
