When faced with a hard decision with no time to think, we often make irrational decisions based on certain circumstances. To take the law upon oneself is not an option available to those who have no authority. John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ readers are confronted with a situation of similarity as George’s malignant action of shooting Lennie at the end of the novel was pressured by the threat of Curley and an apparent weakness for other’s suffering. George’s actions raised debate on how his response can be justified, however, also condemned. In support of George, he saved Lennie from a potential death at the hands of Curley, however in rejecting George’s actions, it was not definite that Curley was going to kill Lennie, but by shotting him,
Because he was blind to the prophecy, he blinds himself to remember everything he had done. His fate would have been execution, but by punishing himself, he makes other believe that he is punished. In addition to Oedipus avoiding his fate he is a coward in terms of his actions. He tells Creon to exile him far away because he is too afraid to deal with all that has happed. When he says “Drive me out of this country as quickly as may be to a place where no human voice can ever greet me.” (Ln.
The Prime Instigator of Conflict is Fear Fear and violence is rampant within the Salem society in “The Crucible”. This insular society is obsessed with sin and damnation, where neighbors are found pitted against each other and judgment is the norm. This is an extremely conflicted environment that engenders fear. The structure of this community fights itself because it is in massive conflict, so hysteria and anarchy is the rule of the day. The rigid and apprehensive nature of the society encourages conflict as it denies the individuals the opportunity for legitimately voicing and enunciating ones true self.
An influential nobleman, the Duke of Northumberland, was killed by the rebels whilst attempting to negotiate a peace with them. This may have been an advantage to Henry, as Northumberland was a possible future traitor; although he had not backed Richard at the Battle of Bosworth, he had not openly supported Henry either. This sort of open rebellion and the murder of a major noble will most likely have come as a shock to Henry, however, which may have accounted for the way in which he dealt with the rebellion afterwards. Another thing that shows Henry’s difficulty in dealing with this rebellion is that afterwards he did not collect taxes from Yorkshire for the war with France, which ultimately led to his defeat. This shows that Henry caved
Throughout the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot, it was evident that Deborah Lacks was curious to find out what happened to her mother, Henrietta, and her sister, Elsie. For her mother, she wanted to find out how she died and what happened to the HeLa cells. For her sister, Deborah wanted to know how she died and what kind of life she had at Crownsville. These questions concerning Elsie and Henrietta took such a toll on Deborah that she became physically ill and suffered extreme stress. In order to find out what happened to her sister Elsie, Deborah and Rebecca went to visit Crownsville where Elsie was staying before she died.
Reverend Hale's closed mind prevented him from seeing the true John Proctor Hale arrives at Proctor's house to warn him that Elizabeth has been accused of witchcraft. Despite their reputation as model citizens, Hale jumps a to any opportunity to label them as evil. Elizabeth does not give him what he wants to hear, so he turns his attention to
Criminals usually plan out and act upon the scenario in a time when they’re not being followed and during the scenario they are not available; Wiggims was nowhere to be heard of or seen, therefore he is a suspect. As the Chief you are authorized to be in control of society, protect it and follow the higher authorization person(s). The Mayor of Springfield, Quimby, told the Police to “take out Burns,” and clearly chief Wiggims is once against suspected because of his authority as a police offer. The little time before and after the shooting, Chief Wiggims told Jimbo Jones to stay away from the statue near the parking lot (where Mr.Burns was shot near the Simpsons car) because he was loitering and during that time it can be safely assumed that Wiggims had committed the crime, got rid of evidence (jimbo Jones) and may have had some cause to leave bloodstains on the Simpsons car. After all the person who was not at the shooting, and was responsible for the case being Wiggims would be a great idea due to the authority(Chief Wiggims), power(Quimby) and the gun that had made the sound when shot.
“Accepting the reality of our sinfulness means accepting our authentic self. Judas could not face his shadow; Peter could. The latter befriended the impostor within; the former raged against him.” (Brennan Manning). If someone cannot handle how society used to be in Huck Finn’s time, then they should not read the book instead of ruining it for the rest of the public. People like to criticize work that tells of historical events and does not provide authentic details, so Mark Twain would have been doing this novel an injustice by not including the N word in his book.
You gonna get me in trouble jus’ like George says you will” (91). He thought he was just keeping her quiet, not killing her. It’s not like he had the intention to kill her. His mental disability keeps him from thinking like a normal person. Lennie is not responsible for her death because he did not understand what was
The ending of ‘The Awakening’ is a conglomeration of all the events of the book. Edna’s suicide stems from her botched transcendence and subsequent fall. Chopin uses ambiguity in the last passage to allow the reader to explore their own meaning of the book and not force one into thinking the same as another reader. Chopin portrays the ending in a multitude of ways both religiously and earthly. The religious aspects of her suicide begin on page 189.
