Based on the principle of being honorable and upholding morals of virtue, accepting athletes that are weaker academically than other applicants because they hold strong physical skills rather than intellectual skills is not unethical. It has already been determined that colleges often take into consideration non-academic related attributes when evaluating applications. The amount of discipline, dedication and training that athletes must subject themselves to is just as, if not more, demanding as getting good grades or scoring high on the SAT. The amount of effort and commitment athletes put into their sport should not be overlooked and should not be deemed less worthy than students who perform well academically. Athletic achievements are just as notable as intellectual achievements. It is when colleges begin to give outrageous benefits, bordering on bribery, that the fine line between what is ethical and what is not is crossed. When monetary or non-monetary bribes are used as an incentive to coax an athlete toward choosing one school over another, the school is no longer acting ethically and is not upholding its responsibility to be fair to all applicants and…show more content…
Most universities follow the same guidelines to accept prospective students. Many universities will use a benchmark in the selection process to admit students. GPA’s and SAT scores are very important factors along with community service prior high school student body involvement. Harvard for example durring 1959 and 1968 bent the guidelines to admit students with lesser scores that may meet the universities objectives like affirmative action. The ethics standards and values are the responsibility of the admissions board and college and do need to be followed. So the subject of ethical behavior and what is not has and will continue to be debated till the end of time. Athletic and academic achievements are special. Oh how splendid is it when both are achieved by the same student. Not every time is this the case, so many times we see monetary and material support provided to student athletes. Some times we even see academic cheating taking place to support the athlete in the class room. So when the bribes and the special favors to both the athlete and parents are offered it is unethical and should be avoided. The university and staff need to be charged with the responsibility to be ethical in all dealings especially with the future leaders of
