The Importance of Erythrina Tree and its Chemical Contents Coral tree is cultivated throughout the tropics. It grows best in tropical lowlands with moderate rainfall (40-60 in). It grows well in a wide variety of soil textures and pH because it is a nitrogen-fixing tree, so it can tolerate poor soils, but prefers sandy loams. For example, the coral tree is planted along cacao and betel nut plantations for soil improvement. This plant can also tolerate salty conditions, water logging, and seasonal drought. The erythrina tree is most often used as a shade tree among coffee, fence post, boundary plant, windbreak, fuel wood, cattle food, and a good source of green manure. This plant is also a native food for nectar-feeding birds during flowering season. This plant is also been used to make outrigger on traditional canoes and for floats on fishing nets. In some islands, the bark and leaves are used to make traditional medicines, but there’s controversy on its usage. Some islands use it to make a drink to cure curses, and the smoke from smoldering leaves, bark, or roots is inhaled for the same purpose. Other islands use the leaves and bark to treat stomachache. Some islands use the leaves as an eye ailments and the bark as an anti-inflammatory. In Asia, the bark and leaves are used to cure joint pain and pathogenic parasites such as tapeworm, roundworm, and threadworm. For lactating mothers, they use this plant to stimulate lactation. It is also used as a laxative, diuretic, and expectorant. The first chemical compounds derived from the erythrina tree were alkaloids. Alkaloids are derived from amino acids and nitrogenous compounds. It acts on the body as a central nervous system depressant. It is used as a muscle relaxant and an anti-inflammatory drug.
