Imagine killing your best friend. Imagine smashing into a telephone pole, crushing their bones. Imagine the pain and suffering they would go through. Then Imagine going on trial for their death, the icy stares shooting daggers into your back as you walk into the court room. Imagine the verdict guilty, and the sentence of 30 years. 30 dragging long years to think about how you could be so stupid to kill someone you love. And how you ask did this all start? Like the night of a typical teenager. Chairperson, honourable judges, ladies and gentlemen, fellow students. You start the night by picking up a carload of your closest friends and you head to the party scene. You have a few drinks, maybe a beer or two, maybe even some shots, but never enough to get really tipsy... or so you think. You jump back in the car, music blaring. Headed to another party, maybe even home. Your best friend says he knows a shortcut, so you follow his directions and turn down a narrow road. You speed up, in a hurry, to hit that one last party before curfew. All of a sudden theres another car coming straight for you. You brake and swerve, but you swerve too far and hit a telephone pole smashing you car, and your best friend. Alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Many young people are experiencing the consequence of drinking too much, and at too early an age. Each year, approximately 5 000 young people die as a result of underage drinking. This includes about 1900 from motor vehicle accidents, 1600 from homicides, 300 from suicide, and many more from other injuries. It is a serious epidemic that is overtaking our country. Underage drinking is spreading like a virus. There are teenagers drinking everywhere you look.
